I was out for a walk today and I came to a hill. I began walking up it but was quickly distracted by a rustle in the leaves at my feet. It was a garter snake that was about 2-3 feet in length. I got down on my knees and crept slowly towards the snake until I was about a foot away from it. We had this little stare down for what felt like 10 minutes. I could see the snake's body expand and contract as it breathed, or possibly as it's little heart raced. This expanding and contracting began to slow as the snake grew less afraid of my presence. Then he turned his head towards me, flicked his tongue and slithered off as if to say that we had an interesting meeting but he really had to go off and do snake things. I've never gotten that close to a wild snake before. It was a pretty cool experience.
I had the same thing happen to me once, but I grabbed the snake instead of just looking at it. As it wrapped around my arm it took a nice long greasy dump. I should of just observed it like you did, lol, ick.
Ha ha, lucky! I live in the suburbs here, if you will, so most I see is birds. Once I get my license and it warms up though, I'm gonna be going out looking for rubber boas, gaters, and pine and/or gopher snakes.
Huge snake - are you for real?!? lol In our basement, I found a 6'6" moccasin (copperhead) - big around as your thigh, if you have a thick thigh, in the middle. It flipped ALL of us out in the house - and even a few close friends and it took 48 hours to get someone to come and get this thing. The only observing I did was as I dashed away - after I figured out what I was looking at. It was on top of a curtain rod, which was close to a light (so I guess it was drawn by heat). Whatever...I don't care. I was bitten by a copperhead baby and it Put Me Out of Commission for a while...and I was glad to know this one was gone - forever! It would have been nice to have made a belt out of it tho'.
Come on everyone, that is a big enough snake if you have never really seen one up close. I think it is great you took time to really have a look at it. I have two large snakes that live in my back yard under my clothes line stand. They sun on it. I don't get too close as then they take off under it again. They do a lot of good so they get to live here.
Iv'e Lived On, And Worked The Land All My Life, And Trust Me, The Only Good Snake, Is A Dead Snake... Cheers Glen.
Absolutely, Glen! I have had people ask, well, what SHAPE were their eyes; did the snake have "pits" in the side of their head? WTH I am NOT going to get that close unless I am freakin paralyzed. Dead snakes = my kind of snake
