There are better forums for this, but those most helpful are also the least populated. RT has lots of people and I'm someone could offer some advice.
This is my happy lovely dog. The one I'm talking about is the Rat Terrier, Trixie.
For the last eight months she has had a wound on her face, constantly oozing, scabbing, falling off and leaving a hole, still oozing, more scabbing, etc. Eight months. Hasn't healed.
My mom said she was scratched by a cat with the man she was living with at the time, the beginning of this year.
Mom cleans the wound every once in a while, but largely ignores it. The pillow she sleeps on is stained with face-ooze alllll over it.
The best I can do as far as pictures go is a shitty phone camera picture as she sleeps next to me.

at this moment is is a huge black rocky scab that is half falling off on one side, pink and oozy underneath. It smells. Hair is growing through the scab.

I cannot take her to the vet, and my mom doesn't care enough to do something about it.

Essentially I'm just looking for advice on what is is, why it won't heal, and what to do about it. Its been like this for months.

she may have an abcess. most definitely an infection. and exam is anywhere from 50-70 dollars and the meds will be about 15. it won't get better without meds and it could spread to her mouth, eyes, nose etc.

looks like you mom isn't good at taking care of dogs either. may there is a low cost clinic in your area, sarah.

i wish you both the best. maybe you could mow a couple of neighborhood lawns to get the money for her?

clean wound with peroxide, apply neosporin/ Anti-biotic ointment ..
keep dog hydrated, as the infection is internal, will heal faster if dog is drinking water steadily..

take dog to vet should you not see improvements, this type of care shouldnt cost more than $100.00, dog needs antibiotics..

She may also need to wear a cone to keep her from scratching at it.

You may also want to try to put some mittens on the paws, dogs are like humans in that they rub what irritates them and it tends to make it worse. I am serious, we do this with ours all the time. If it is a body wound we also use t-shirts to stop them.

I do agree with orison, as breeders we clean with peroxide, use polysporin and antibiotics.

She doesn't mess with it at all. (Or rather, I've never seen her mess with it)

I can't take her to the vet myself because I haven't got the cash or any means of getting there. There is a vet about a mile down the road here, but she isn't quite keen on being too far from home, so walking there would be an issue.
She is a bit prissy also, doesn't like to be touched by anyone she didn't live with as a puppy (we've had her 12 years)

I could probably gather around $100 in the next week or two however. She is sweet as pie and likes to pick up my arm with her nose and make me pet her, and it is just...icky when I get scab gross on me.

Thanks for the advice and help everyone.

It might be an idea to walk then to the vet's yourself and ask if they would treat the dog and allow you to pay in that little bit of time.

It would not hurt to ask. :)

Edit: Don't take the dog until you know. :)

I believe if you approach the dog with love and care.. It will allow you to mend its wounds,..

you should also use latex gloves when cleaning it- and applying salve. so not to transfer your human hand germs to it...

there are free and low-cost vet services out there.

    try doing a web search.

here is a link to a page with services in Florida

    http://www.lovethatcat.com/stfl.html

many of the links are cat centered, but many are general free clinic listings

I hope your dog gets better soon. She looks like a real sweetheart.

    :)

oh, and if you call a free clinic they may be able to give you some help over the phone. If you explain that you can't get a ride there, they might be able to help with that too, but maybe not.

If you are in a position where a vet recognizes you, go to there house and ask for advice and tell him/her whats going on. You would be begging, it sound dumb, but it can work.

A true vet is the best option, is there anything you can do to get the dog there?

Well obviously the vet would be your best option, but if that is absolutely out of the picture then get some hydrogen peroxide and some antibiotic cream, such as neosporin and clean it up at LEAST once a day. It would also be good if you could bandage it somehow because she is prob. scratching at it. ALSO this is abit expensive, but you can get liquid penicilin like farmers use to treat livestock and inject it into the neck scruff.

Orison: The problem is, no one but me and about three others know how to approach her in a way it appreciates and will respond positively too.

Thanks for the link e7m8, I'll check it out.

It sounds like a good idea to walk over to the vet tomorrow and see what they say about it and how they might be able to help. I'm currently in a teeny town about two miles in diameter, the people who own the vet's office are lovely and I'm sure they'll help with something.

Thanks for the advice and concern.

There's a thing called cat scratch disease caused by a bacteria Bartonella that cats transmit. I know humans can get it so maybe dogs can too?

sarah, don't worry about how she'll react. if she gets scared or aggressive, it's ookay, the vet knows how to deal with it.

try to make that money, and then tell the vet your financial position (im sixteen and my mom won't help) a lot of times the vet will have a good samaritan box of extra meds that they can give your for free.

    you can do this!

If it's been like that for eight months, she needs to see a vet. It's not fair to leave her like that.

I know here, the vets will not turn an animal away that needs help. Go along and ask what to do if an animal needs treatment, but you haven't the money at the moment.
