I listened to it on my 5 hit breakthrough, start to finish. There were points I didn't even know it was music that was playing, it was just reality. I know firsthand how well that album goes with lucy That cat's something I can explain!
 that would be something, justin bieber on a strip. i might just have to try that as an experiment.
the studio album of Ummagumma is pretty awful on most of the songs. As for piper in regards to LSD, remember a lot of the songs Syd wrote were done in at least basic form before he really started even doing LSD. Things like Bike being at the end make perfect sense, it's a common thing on albums to make the last song a stand out so when people hear it they'll like it and continue to listen to the album all the way though(especially in vinyl days) and when Piper came out, side 2 of the vinyl began with Interstellar Overdrive, then drifted into the softer songs of the Scarcrow, Chapter 24 and The Gnomes, and if you were listening to this for the first time you'd go from that to all of a sudden I GOT A BIKE YOU CAN RIDE IT IF YOU LIKE I remember on my first mushroom trip I was under a blanket and Interstellar Overdrive gave me crazy closed eye visuals that made me feel like I was going through space. Then I opened my eyes.
Curious what you make of this song GBL. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTtXVrANEhU"]YouTube - syd barrett
Jugband blues is my favorite song on A saucerful of secrets along with Set the Controls for the heart of the sun. It has a more personal, reflective tone compared to the stuff on 'Piper'.
It's the one song that gives me what I consider to be a "flashback" to a pretty heavy acid trip a few years back. But what do you personally make of the song GBL?
Yeah wondering if you have any other meaning other than what people normally say about syd just losing it
What I got from it after listening to it during that particular trip is that Syd came to a realization that there's something of a "character flow" in our reality. There will always be someone to take on your role if you should fall out of it, and there's still a concept to convey. These concepts seem to be predetermined by outside forces and brought into the consciousness or "script" if you will of the individual, but can be transferred to another if that character can no longer play their role. This has also been expressed by others (Alex Grey and IMO David Lynch for example). Syd appears to have not wanted to live his life on stage, and therefore others took his place.
Hmmm interesting...I chose to emphasize acceptance for a reason. Do you think its fair to say that what you said is along the lines that syd knew he was going to get kicked out of Pink Floyd and he knew David gilmour was (already did live at this time) going to fill his role? Or do you maintain its kind of a more abstract 'deep' meaning?
Its a sad song, I know how he feels. I kind of agree with you smitty, but I think it also goes deeper than that. Like the lines at the end of the song. I have alot of trouble listening to music without getting personal with it. When tripping, well only with luc, I cant help but feel that all the songs I listen to are about me, and every little tone and word goes perfectly with what I am doing and how I am feeling. Is the music about "I" or is "I" the music? I feel like a chameleon alot.
This is an example of why I'm not to sure about the 'character flow' idea. Schizophrenics, extremely paranoid people and yes even those on hallucinogenic/disassociative drugs to an extent tend to have isolating feelings. Whether it be delusions of grandeur (which is along the lines of you thinking the music is about yourself here) or feelings of isolation and persecution. (they're out to get me) I can't imagine Syd felt very connected to many people at this time so the idea of him seeing this character flow to reality is hard for me to grasp and the only sense I can see him thinking his role being filled was in the literal sense, that he knew he was not going to be in the band anymore. I don't know though, I haven't listened to the song tripping nor have I tried to write lyrics on LSD.
I listened to Jugband Blues and alot of Piper yesterday on 2cb. I didn't focus on the lyrics all that much but what really stood out to me was Piper has a very energetic and tight quality to it compared to Jugband. I listened to some later Floyd too, quite the contrast.
You should listen to Led Zeppelin IV while peaking, man, that shit is trippy as fucking fuck. You can learn soooooooooo much more when listening to music while trippin. When I was listening to Led Zeppelin IV when trippin, I thought it had some hidden meaning about protecting the land and nourishing it and not destroy any of it
I must agree with Led Zep IV. I have not listened to Piper in a long time, maybe it is about time to give it another round.
