Well everyone, I'm leaving thursday for a hitchhiking adventure. I'm not sure where I will end up, but I will be posting updates on the trip here for anyone interested.

A little background: I'm 17 years old, and have decided that my current situation no longer suits me. The environment in my small rural community and it's high school do not suit my personality, creativity, and individuality. So I'm hitting the road! Please leave your patronizing comments off of this thread, I understand all the risks and repercussions of my actions thank you :)

Now for anyone who supports or is interested in this endeavor, share your thoughts, advice, wishes or whatever with me. I want to keep everyone updated, and it would be great if people got involved!

    Happy Trails!

Don't know if you think of yourself as a runaway or not, but here's a link to some hotline numbers. http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/showthread.php?t=408548&f=383

It might be useful to have a runaway number, because they can give you safe shelter in a pinch.

Some of the folks that I've met that have been on the road say that they stay out of cities. You generally have to deal with more agro bullshit there. I think it is probably a lot easier to spange there though.

I don't know what your gender is, but it will probably be both easier and more dangerous getting rides if you are a girl. I met a girl once who was hitching, she was about 18. I didn't worry about her though. She said that she once had trouble with a guy who gave her a ride, but she made it clear that she had a knife and was ready to stab him. As the story goes, he let her out real quick.

So I've never hitched, but I think having a knife and in general being prepared to use it if you have to might help. Probably good to follow intuition when getting rides.

I bet that talking to someone who has extensive experience with hitchhiking might help. Hearing from someone who really knows what it's like and who knows the ropes is probably the best info to get. I wouldn't leave without it.

Off the top of my head, there is some guy outside of Montreal on the couchsurfing boards who has done a crazy amount of hitchhiking.

A cell phone, even one without service, would be useful for 911 calls. A hidden back-up stash for cash also good if you get robbed.

Are you going mostly for adventure or to get out of where you are? If you are going just to get out, I've heard that one of the easiest/safest things to do is to stay with a relative like grandparent, aunt etc.

thats great man. I just hitch hiked north america this past summer and it was great. you meet so many amazing peaceful people on the road. you need to be well prepared though and always carry a knife on you. and you learn so much and experience so many things living on the road.
that couchsurfing site is great i used it quite few times on my travels
    good luck!
