Gene Cranick had forgotten to pay the fee. As his house was burning he offered to pay whatever amount they wanted to put it out. The guy in charge was too busy a 1/2 mile away playing golf to care for Mr. Cranick's oversight or problems. When a family gets destabilized due to catastrophe it creates all sorts of unseen & unforeseeable losses to the community at large. I would venture to say that what it will cost the community is far more than the 75.00 that they decided to let a family's life be destroyed over. The bottom line is that if the fire dept. was there and able, they should have put the fire out. The money could have been worked out. This is inexcusable. (And I'm speaking as a former firefighter.)

First I have to say that this guy is a total asshole for not taking the time to save his animals, there is no reason those animals had to die like that. I cannot believe he had no time to open a door an let them out, turns my stomach:mad: He has no one but himself to blame and not having the cash is no excuse, I am sure the fire department would have broken the 75 bucks into payments if the property owner could not pay it all at once. If you live somewhere that has fees instead of paying taxes that is your choice and you should be prepared to pay them or go without services.

that would be the best way...people who dont want to pay the fee should still be able to get the service but pay full wages/expenses etc...for the service IF they need it

but obviously this needs to be put into policy wherever this happened...maybe all the media attention will help that happen

For all of you people who agree with what the fire department did -
you can all go to *&^% and I'm awfully glad that none of you are my neighbours. What ever happened to humanity? I guess humanity is still there- if you can pay for it. What a sad world we live in. Shame, shame, shame.

I guess humanity [empathy and compassion] isn't in your vocabulary. You have no idea why the person couldn't pay the 75$ nor should it really matter . There are things that people should just do for other people without a second thought. It's becoming a really sad world when everything starts having a price. I doubt you would borrow me anything if you were my neighbour- you would probably charge me a rental fee. There is little point in continuuing this conversation because I'm sure it is just falling on deaf ears. I hope the day never comes when you need someone's help. Peace and love,

Entirely possible they their insurance wouldn't cover people outside the district who didn't pay.

So for arguments sake lets say the firefighters decided to put out the fire. And lets say that one of them was badly injured or died putting out the fire. The family of the injured or dead fireperson would be shit out of luck in getting help with hospital bills or funeral bills as the fireperson was not supposed to be there in the first place. Should the firefighters take that chance even if it could possibly ruin their lives?

they really should change the service policy to every landowner having the choice of paying full cost for fire protection when they require it or paying the $75 of "pooled coverage cost"

but then of course theres always limits to how far they can be from the fire station to even make it worth while..and those people will complain

one thing my city did that kind of relates to this is they started charging homeowners and businesses for false alarms...first one is free then subsequent false calls from alarm systems for police or fire are charged a fee for the wasted man hours ....it really cut down on waste..and made the rest of the town safer because they are ready more now...not missing important rescue calls because some cat tripped someones house alarm

That is a good idea as long as they are able to come up with the 100,000 or so to cover the cost, maybe insurance or something. But in the end isnt it easier just to pay the 75$ Make a 12.50$ payment every 2 months.

its easier to just not start fires in barrels when you dont have the means to properly put out the fire yourself

a lot of insurance companies wont give fire coverage for people who dont have access to fire services...this guy is actually lucky to have coverage

 That the fire should have been more carefully tended is not contested :boxing_smiley: And yes I dont think there is a insurance company that would agree to a policy without fire service.

This is just odd to me. Where I live your property taxes pay for all the police, fire and county sanitation service. Local sanitation is included with my water bill. But even if i don't pay my water bill, they will still pick up my trash. If you purposely start a fire or make a bogus 911 call, you get a bill, but if your house is on fire they handle it first then ask questions. The thing that does surprise people with a big bill is ambulance service. Firefighter EMT's will respond, but if you need transport they call an ambulance service.

Plus if your kid dials 911 and hangs up, the police show up and later you get a bill for $600 dollars for a false alarm.:(
