Hi. I've been wanting to start certain crafts for a while now (making clothes, candles, jewelry, leatherwork, knitting, etc.), but I can't help but think these hobbies will be expensive. I've yet to visit a craft store to see how much they would cost, but in general, is doing crafts an expensive hobby? Or is the hobby itself fun enough to override the cost? Hope you can help.
It depends where you live and if you have access to a large craft store or not. It works pretty much the same as regular shopping, the small stores can't buy in enough bulk to cut the price to the customer, but they are generally run by people who know about crafts and can give you all sorts of advice. There are a lot of internet sites selling craft products but half the fun is choosing, touching and talking about what you want to purchase. Good luck in your new venture!!!!!!!
It also depends on the type of crafts you want to do...some are more expensive than others. And then do you want to keep or sell them? If you're really good and want to sell some of them then etsy.com is a really good website for that, and you can also buy supplies with them. From my experience, if you buy things when they are on sale it cuts down the cost a lot too.
And also it depends on how expensive you would make it. Crafting is creative process so be creative. I know a lot of people (and I´m not the exception) who made new products from the old materials and "recycling" them. I have a lot of new cloths from my friends or family, who bought it and had never do something with it. When I was into hand made candles i told everybody about my passion, until I met my mother´s friend who had a lot of bee wax and was very accommodating to donate it. I know girls who made a hand made jewelry from Swarovski materials, but also girls who are able to do beautiful things from cheap beads, wires, etc. Friend of mine bought a brand new cardigans in the bargain sale and made awesome handbags from them. So there is a lot of chances.
