I don't know that I would call it scary... the only bit that really scared me was when you saw the alien for the first time, you know, on the TV, when it walks out from behind the bush at that kids birthday party, the Brazilian Video... that scared me....

Did you know... In the part of the "Brazilian Video" the anchorwoman says the video was taped in Passo Fundo city that means "Deep Step", and what the boy's saying all the time is "It's behind that garage".

(OH, and I've not seen The Village yet, so please don't say anything about it, I want it to be a surprise)

Well I get scared easily by movies of the supernatural

A movie about a serial killer or a murderer or rapist doesnt do much for me, but give me a possessed soul in a dark forest and I'll be peeing my pants like theres no tomorrow

I agree...this movie did scare me the first time I saw it. And the Brazillian video does have a degree of scariness to it. This is all probably because i feel that with a universe this big there is no way other life forms can not exist.

Signs is one of the few movies that really creeped me out. I need to see it again, actualy. That Brazillian video was awsome, so creepy, I think, because its like the news and home videos that we've (or my young self at least) have been watching our whole lives.

I really hate this movie. I just don't think it's very good.
I did jump.. the first time the dog started barking. My friend laughed at me. :(

It very much seems to be a film that you either love, or hate.

Some people don't understand why an alien invasion film does not have lazer guns, battles in the sky, etc.. Well.. that's because this is not an alien invasion film... if you want alien invasion, watch ID4.

This film is about the family, and how they react to fear and stress. The aliens are just the vehicle for the film... it could just have easily been burgulers or something...

I wrote a huge rant about the film on my site once, I'll find it and post it here.

i started a couple of times but i hated the movie in general.

i got bored, i stopped watchin the movie to look at other pple in the theater a couple of times, which is never good...
it annoyed me a bit that the character played by mel gibson is a copycat of the character played by harvey keitel in from dusk til dawn (a movie i happen to kno by heart)..
im also sorry that joaquin phoenix compromised himself twice in Shyamalan's movies (the other movie bein the village)..

no, i dont like that movie

    M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs)

He is my favourite director. He has directed 5 films (with sixth coming out soon) but most people know him for only three - The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and Signs.

I watched each of the films above separately from each other and fell in love with each of them instantly, it was not until after I had seen Signs that I even found out they where all by the same director (although looking back and watching them again I can see a lot of his style in each of them).

The first I saw was The Sixth Sense, I was drawn to this film by rave reviews and the fact it started Bruce Willis and Haley Joel Osment (a young kid that I think has a lot of talent), but enjoyed it because of it's direction and theme, not to mention the fantastic twist at the end (which luckily I didn't know before seeing the film - if I had it would have ruined it).

The next was Unbreakable, I didn't like this film as much as the other two, but still a great film. Yet again it has Bruce Willis (with the addition of Samuel L Jackson - another class actor) and an interesting twist at the end, although this time not to the same extent as the one in The Sixth Sense. I heard a rumour once that MNS was interested in doing a sequel for Unbreakable, but was bullied out of it by critics (don't listen to them - make the film).

Next we have Signs, it took the longest time from it's release date for me to see this film (almost a year I think), but once I did I was blown away (my favourite of the three). This is a film that you ether love or hate. The people that love it are the people that understand this film is about the Hess family, the emotions they go though in a time of crises, and the idea of fate/faith - it's NOT about the aliens. If the film was about the aliens it would have been a totally different film (more like Independence Day: shots of the aliens landing, scenes in which the heads of state set-up battle plans, etc..), the simple fact that everything we know about the aliens is learned via the TV and from a book should be testament to this fact.

A lot of people have criticised this film and come up with silly questions such as "Why would aliens that are allergic to water come to a planet that's more than 50% water?" These people are upset that the film does not hold them by the hand and explain everything to them in easy to understand English... It's the job of the audience to imagine things like this for themselves, and is in fact one of the many things that I like about the film (a good director does not explain everything). My personal opinion is that the aliens had no choice, in their effort to find a new planet to live on (after their own one being destroyed) earth is the first one they find, and they don't have enough resources to make it to the next suitable planet. (I do have another idea, but I'll leave you with this one for the moment).

Another question I've heard people ask is "How is it possible that an alien creature that can leap over buildings, but not break out of a room it was locked in?". Yet again you need to work this out for yourself, however if you are cleaver enough you'll know that often in the animal world, creatures will ether have the benefit of speed & agility OR strength (almost never both). Take an elephant for example, it would easily have the ability to break a door down, but you'd never see it jumping on a roof - or a cat, great speed and agility, but could never break down a door. Anyway, I'm getting off track.

Another important factor of this film is the fact it does NOT have a twist at the end like the other two. Like I said above, when I first saw this film I didn't know it was by the same guy, and so was not expecting a twist, but for everyone that saw it on it's merit of being a MNS film, would have been surprised when it ended like it did. I think this is an important step for MNS as he needs to teach his audience that not every film he makes will have a twist (after all, how much of a surprise is something if you are expecting it).

MNS has the ability to take an otherwise un-mainstream topic (Ghosts, Super Heroes, Aliens) and turn it into a blockbuster. He also has the skill to put a lot of symbolism into his films, an example of this is the colour red in The Sixth Sense (any time you see red it's showing a connection between the earthy and ghostly realms) and its skills like this that makes me think he is the next Steven Spielberg or Stanley Kubrick. His next film is currently in production, and I can't wait to see it.

mmm, well your review explains well why u liked the movie, so thats good, i mean thats your opinion and it sounds grounded...

    just a lil comment :
i thought there was a twist at the end... ok, before seein the movie, i didnt read anythin about it, but the fact that the movie's title is signs and that the pics of the movies showed the signs mel gibson finds in his fields in the movie (i dont remember the name of mel gibsons character), all that made me think the "signs" were the actual signs in the fields...
BUT IN FACT, they're more like the signs of fate.. how he got signs all his life leadin to that terrible situation he finds himself in at the end..

^^ i dunno if it was all that clear, hope u got my point

I've spoken to a few diffrent people about this, and have heard some diffrent theories.

One theory (which i heard from someone so keen for there to be a twist they he invented one) is that the aliens were not atttacking the earth, but were here to help.... that scene at the end where the alien was holding the kid, according to this one person, the gas was something to CURE him - like i said, he changed the facts of the movie for his own end...

Someone else I've spoken to about this believes that the 'twist' is the fact the movie does not have a twist (if that makes sence). Everyone, after seeing Sixth Sence and Unbrekable are all expecting something strange to happen at the end, so when nothing happens, they are not prepared for it. I guess I kind of like this idea, and it fits in with what I believe, i just find it easier to use the 'no twist' argument.

I liked the idea of the film better than the actual experience. I think its a facinating subject...just didn't really like the acting and found it to be a bit anticlimactic.

Agreed about the footage of the birthday party being the scariest part.

A very well-done essay, though mentioning his becoming the next Kubrick... eh, well, no one will ever be like Kubrick. I do, however, agree wholeheartedly that he will be compared to Spielberg. It is clearly evident in his work. For example, he seems to direct children in a manner where they are comfortable and they turn out successful performances. Also, his humor in his films are matched to the drama enough so the humor doesn't overpower the drama. That, by the way, is a reason why the screenplay, in my honest opinion, is so sucessful. The humor is a strong point in the film. It is almost magical because the humor never falls flat on its face. Sometimes, even, the humor will be there one moment but it will smoothly lead right into horror.

I'd also like to mention that this film reminds me, if I may be so bold, of the chamber pieces Ingmar Bergman made in the 60s. Not many locations, never leaving the farm except on one occasion, and few characters. This is my favorite Shymalan picture.

    Peace

man i love this movie so much. I just love how everything comes together at the end. The kid having azma (Sp?) so he couldn't breath in the toxic alien stuff, and the girl leaving her water everywhere and the aliens were allergic to it. Also mel gibsons brother having the bat on the wall so he could beat the alien and finally Mel's wife's final words which he thought were just a flash back to a baseball game ended up being what the brother needed to do. great movie

I loved The Sixth Sense and The Village (an absolutely mind-blowing movie) but Signs did not impress me I thought the movie was just plain boring ( The Village is too at some points though) I think the main reason Signs disapointed me was the lack of amazing twists. I still haven't got around to seeing Unbreakable though

Yeah that was a shame, there is so much potential in him. Though of course he did make the best of the parts.*

So yeah, Signs. I liked it, not because was scary (it's not, I'm a total pussy over movies, but didn't jump once) but for everything else it had to offer. The suspense, characters (Bo is adorable) and such.
The ending unforunatly sucked. There's phrase 'jumping the shark' #, well that happened when the alien showed up. It just went lame and sappy from then on.

I love Dan's idea of the twist being there is no twist :)

The Villiage is amazing, won't say to much so as not to spoil it. But it's really good, totally didn't expect the 'twists'. It's thought provoking too (for me at least). And yes it is scarier.
Unfortunatly like Signs the ending sucked. Final twist was brilliant and then ... blah.

I kind of get the feeling endings are not Shyamalan's forte. :)

*Lol I can be such a fan girl, and this is me on a sane/good day.

#The climax of sorts, or rather the point after which it just goes totally downhill.
