I watched it last night.... and while I'm sure it's a very good film.... I found it pointless.... nothing happened.... but worse than that.... it took 4 hours for nothing to happen.... I dunno, maybe it's just me, but I need films to have a hero, and for something to happen in them... What do you think?
I love that film! While I'll admitt it is very long and some parts don't seem completely necessary, I think that the story's amazing. I like the way it portrays the Sioux tribes as they really are (or were) rather than just having them shown as the bad guys, as they are in a lot of westerns. I think it's great that they actually speak their own language too, with subtitles. Makes it seem much more authentic. And the journey that John Dunbar takes, the way he is transformed as a person; and some of the emotional relationships that he builds are so touching, especialy at the end of the film when he has to leave the tribe and Wind In His Hair tells him that he will always be his friend. Appart from that, I think the musical score is totally amazing. Very nice film.
we just watched it for the last week and a half in history. i loved it, and was glad that for once they showed a movie that was worth watching in school. unfortunately i have to write an essay on it...shouldn't be that bad though, i like writing
i watched it last year in 8th grade, but i did not enjoy it b/c they ept stopping it to explain something that everyone knew. or like they had to explain the word ******, but who doesnt know that? anyways, then i saw it at home and its an ok movie, gets boring but is interesting. i like the wolf.
I understood the film, the journey from being in the army, to being accepted by the indian tribes, etc... How he transformed... It's the same as Bicentennial Man in that respect.. and it sounds great as a book.... but not as a film... I just didn't see the point.
i love that movie. i like how he came to relize that the native americans werent evil people and he stood up for them.
Unfortunately, The World Of Dan, it seems like you have watched the Director's Cut, which adds about 50 minutes back into the film, padding it to four hours. I have bought this version on DVD and was disappointed by the end. It is a great film at three hours (the length of the theatrical cut.) Its tight editing won an Oscar in 1990. But this four version is not the one that recieved the Oscar. This Director's Cut adds some, not all, but some pointless scenes that were rightfully cut in 1990. Now, this films is, at times, a bit of a rambler. This is clearly evident in the last ten minutes. Cutting away to scenes to completedly break the narrative and, therefore, ruin the drama. Oh well, at least it's not that bad. Peace
That movie was awesome. Indeed it was long and it took me three nights to watch it in incriments with Dad. What John's ignorant Army mates did to his wolf was so sad! I loved Stands-With-A-Fist and how she first tried to say his name and called him John Dunbear. I love her story too about how she knocked the mean woman down and earned her name. Yes, the last scene with Wind-in-His-Hair was heartbreaking, but it's one of those "He had to do it, man!" moments, hehe.
I love it more every time I watch it. Costner was obviously at his prime. Shit, the part with the soldiers and Two-Socks just started . That's a big reason it's such a good movie, though. It can be so uplifting and so sad.
