As a popular artist - I think so. I really not sure anyone has exceeded the quantity of good lyrics, the intensity, the honesty, the sincerity, the quality, not to mention the impact and influence.

From honest love to the Vietnam War - there is no one who has had his influence.

Could he croon - "Lay Lady Lay". Could he rock "All Along The Watch Tower". Could he chastise "Oxford Town" - he could an has done it all - vocally and lyrically. He has got to be the greatest - or among the greatest ever.

There is no way to measure who is the greatest subjectively. But he's certainly on the short list, that cannot be disputed.

it is impossible to deem anyone the "greatest" but from my very subjective, biased point of view, i would say ..yes yes yes. Although I do think he's a better poet than musician, if that makes sense. I pay attention to his lyrical content more than anything else in his music.

Perhaps Johnny Cash? I don't play the greatest game though, it's not an absolute thing at all and I rarely can choose.

Great wordsmith, horrible singer, early influence on a few others who then influenced more people - but mostly he's an annoying screechy wanker.

In conclusion, he should've been a poet.

    Lennon/McCartney
    Bob Dylan
    Jimi Hendrix
    Ozzy Osbourne
    Jimmy Page/Robert Plant
    Bob Marley
    Madonna
    Dave Gilmore
    Robert Fripp
    Freddie Mercury/Brian May
    Johnny Marr/Morrissey
    Robert Smith
    Black Francis
    Michael Jackson
    Matt Bellamy

Covers the decades. I can prove why each person are songwriting duo is on that list. They all created or perfected something that others did not. Matt Bellamy is included because I think he is the torch bearer for current rock music- he is writing songs that actually sound modern. Someone else mentioned Jack White, he is great but just rehashing the seventies.

I want to also note, that Jeff Buckley probably would have gone on to become someone of a similar calibre. But alas, he died, so he is not on my list. I just think he had the potential.

I've got news, folks...the 20th century began long before the sixties and there's a a lot of musicians and composers that were just as popular and influential as any of the folks mentioned in this thread.

    Louis Armstrong
    Duke Ellington
    Frank Sinatra

    ...to name just a few.

None of those really had much influence on the 2nd half of the century. Growing up in the 1990's I cant relate to any of those. Eventhough some of Dylan's stuff feels dated I still can relate to it.
