What do you think of the military's "Don't Ask /Don't Tell". To me, it is NOT the same thing as gay marrage and to me it is not just like the integration in the military of women and black people.

"Don't ask don't tell, don't leave out any details" hehehehee

it's the same as women and black people in the sense that the integration has been happening for a long time. and who says the poliy is the same as gay marriage?

politicians that are for changing the policy are just trying to get more military power. and to get the gays' and liberals' votes.

Hopefully, we are evolving. Discrimination is not only patently wrong; it is both very counterproductive and it imposes unnecessary societal cost to all. The obvious push for change may be a product of short-sighted, egoistic interests of the few members of the political establishment. However, there seems to be an wide-spread understanding that we cannot carry on with the business as usual in this time and age.

You relize that whatever the policy is.. There's a pretty good chance that an openly gay person in the military would just get the shit beat out of him..

This is just based on the speculation of my 2 army friends, based on the kind of people that join the army..

I'm all for evolution.. But fixing laws doesn't mean problems will be fixed, bigger new ones might be added.

Very well said. And it pretty much sums up how I feel about the topic. :)

I hate to do this but I had to pull a comment from my brother on the issue. He was in the Navy and was stationed on a submarine.
"But what gets me is it goes against all the sh*t we got hammered into our heads in boot camp, which was simply this - it doesn't matter if the man next to you is black, white, Mexican, Catholic or Hindu, as long as you're dedicated to your unit, your uniform and your country, it doesn't matter. I can't figure out why we can't extend that solidarity to gays and lesbians in uniform."

Your brother makes a very valid point here. Groups embracing solidarity have historically fared much better off than those bent on exclusion. It is also true that selfish individuals fared better off within such groups. The rest they say, are just footnotes.

On a more private, daily level, I do embrace my own "Do Not Ask" policy. I don't believe that I have any right to intrude upon other people's intimate lives. If they wish to disclose their sexual orientation, preferences, etc., that is their prerogative.

I wish there were more people in the world like your brother: The world would be a better place for all. :)

I always took the Single Man Hypothesis to be referring to the gay guy.

With this issue, as with many things in life, I dont think its the way it seems looking from the outside.

The Military, Emergencies Services, any type of job thats no so 9-5 or is dangerous, I think you'd find a slightly higher proportion of people without families and thus a slightly higher proportion of gay/bi people

So is it "Dont ask, Dont tell" or "We dont want you to know we get the homos to do the really dangerous stuff"

Why would you want to tell anyone anyways? I always figured somebody's sexuality is a personal thing, you're in the army to fight for your country- you're not there to gang-bang your regiment.
