Am I being nosy

    A few weeks ago I made a post here complaining that my "friend" who was envious of my job called up my boss and asked if he could do the same work, which pissed me off because he effectively stole my endorsement. Especially since he's a lazy person and I'd rather not endorse people who will make me look bad.

    So he's been producing low-quality work, and my boss doesn't realize it because he's too busy. I've found numerous instances of plagiarism (we're writers), which is the biggest issue. I want to tell my boss about this plagiarism so that my "friend" will be fired and I won't have to worry about being looked down on for recommending a shite employee. Am I in the right, or am I just being nosy?

    With respect, I think you have real issues with this person that are not professional and bordering on retribution.

    If you are actually concerned about plagiarism, then clearly state to him that you know it has happened and if it happens again, then you are left with no choice but to take that further. If that is really the issue......

    No employer wishes to have someone working for them who is petty and overly concerned about another employee. If your employer is satisfied with what he produces, it is none of your business.

    Perhaps as step back is in order, for you. Instead put that energy into doing your job.

    Putting "friend" in quotes is very appropriate because this person is no friend but a sophisticated leech. Don't make his work your business and just concentrate on your own efforts because he's actually making you look better by comparison.

    A step back, as heat suggested, is in order... I'd wager a BIG step. If you choose to make this an issue then you're likely saying a lot about yourself and nothing about the "friend" that the boss probably hasn't already figured out. As BBAD said, it's really not your business. Don't set off red flags about yourself by making it so.

    I think your problem is with the "friend"; not with your co-worker.

    If he's plagiarizing your work; report him to the boss -- if you suspect him of plagiarizing others, I wouldn't recommend it.

    My boss fired him. More accurately, he instructed me to fire him, when someone else complained about him. In the note, I made it very clear that he'd crossed the line by going behind my back to get the job, but that's not why he was fired. Couldn't have gone better :)

    Question regarding the bold. Did you actually put that in writing? Do you know the legalities of doing so?

    Unless this person's work is going to affect your job in someway, leave it. You will make yourself look like a giant dick, and that could hurt your future.

    If the guy is screwing up, let him get fired on his own. Be patient, it'll happen if he deserves it.

    And drop him as a "friend", because obviously he's not one.

    EDIT: I just read further..
    OMG. You may have just screwed up big time writing about it being personal.

    What? My boss fired him for plagiarism, among other things. I had nothing to do with that.

    I think one point everybody missed was "he effectively stole my endorsement." which by that I assume the guy called his boss and said that sheeprooter would provide a good reference and "endorsement" as to his work quality and ethic.
    If somebody used me as a reference without my express permission to gain employment at the same place I work, I don't think I would be to happy about it either and would also say something about it. Especially if they were not somebody that I would feel comfortable giving a good reference about.
    Regardless of the "rightness" of it, the other guys poor performance could reflect badly on the OP if his boss were under the impression that he recommended him for the job.
    If I read the OP correctly, that is what he was upset about and what he relayed to his boss.
