Freedom of Polygamy

The United States is supposed to be a free country. I can understand how certain drugs are illegal for public safety but what about polygamy? If the united states was truly a free country shouldn't polygamy be legal? Because of polygamy being illegal it is also thought of as absurd by most people. people are so used to monogamy that polygamists make them uncomfortable

Actually, the technical term more fitting this sentiment is "polyamory" rather than polygamy, since the latter is derived as a legal term from being married to more than one person - which is illegal by law not only in the US.

I believe the number of spouses falls into the area of religion, and I don't think the government should have a say. It's just another example of the government trying to be our nanny.

 

I agree. Polygamy should be legal. I should be able to have all the rights and protections given married couples with whoever I want, and call it marriage. But hell, at least polyamory isn't illegal and is only marginally frowned upon in a lot of places. Maybe someday it'll work out so people can have all sorts of different marriages.

You probably wouldn't be able to file taxes jointly, though...

 

I don't think it does have to do with religion. yes, most religions are monogamist and some limit the amount of wives one could have. but thats not the point. the gov't is nannying us and it makes it hard on those of us who are polyamorist b/c polygamy is illegal ppl are not used to it making them wary of us

 

It always seems to be a man with several wives, never the other way around. Seems to me a way of repressing women.

 

The TV show Big Love shows a fairly healthy polygamous family. I don't think the women are being repressed. I mean, I know it's fiction, but still, if done right, I think it's OK.

 

I'm no accountant, but my guess is it has more to do with taxes and joint filings and other legal bindings that married couples encounter, etc. At this point I think the government could care less about whether or not polygamy is "moral." 1 man + 5 wives = less money for the government than 5 men with 1 wife each.

 

Why would any man want to put himself through haveing more than one wife at a time.....talk about sadistic!

 

I'm actually surprised it isn't legal. More kids means more tax dollars for those criminals in Washington.

 

I don't think it is oppressing woman. if a woman wants multiple husbands she should be allowed too have them.
and Oz NOrth as far as why would any man would want more then one wife. love is something that is completely infinite. im not married and cnt tell u tht its easy but if a man loves two woman he should be able to marry them both.

lunaverse- there arent any more kids then if each woman involved would marry seperately. plus the bigger the family the more tax breaks they get.

its all about property, and tracking where the money goes.
i dont advocate fucking everyone you meet just on principle, but if we are talking honest adult relationships then no one has the right to tell anyone anything.

Nina, it is easy to say you want to be fucking more than one guy. in our society girls with more than 1 guy are fairly common. however this thread is about having relationships with more then 1 partner not fuckin whom we want

 

I wasn't putting out my message clearly before. If a man can marry as many women, well then why can't a woman marry as many men as she wants in a loving way.
I'm very little minded about these sorts of topics but I wouldn't want myself in situation to be married or joined to a man who is committed to other women. I just feel it isn't right. I would like to know the real views of these women. There were talk shows who brought some light to these sorts of relationships but really, how can they live like this. They love the man they are tied with but do they also love to be with the other women whom they share their lives with. Now in the case with a woman to be together with more than one man. Will the men love the other men? I didn't want to say to be sleeping with others but married to a large number of people.
Alas this is a free country and everyone has the right to do whatever they are pleased to do as long that it respects the laws and others.
I'm someone who thinks that marriage is just a piece of paper like a contract. So I might sound like someone who appears to sleep with others but it is not my nature. I think being committed to someone without the hassel of a wedding would be fine with me.

 

well tht's xactly what i'm saying what right does the gov't have to limit the amount of wives/husbands some1 has.
as for a woman who has multiple husbands would they all love eachother. it depends on who theses men are.

 

Hopefully polygamy becomes legal someday so I can marry my two wonderful girlfriends.
