Great idea, I thought about that too - what if all the former Russian empire states unite against Russia, plus like I said there are lots of problems with some Russian autonomous republics - they could attack it from inside. Well, those are just some crazy thoughts, actually I hope there won't be any wars at all, but that's impossible. And once again Russia is not a superpower, it used to be, but now it's not.
Yes, China has the economic and the military power to do whatever they want, I guess we're all just lucky they're so peaceful so far.
Due to interdependence increasing there isn't much to gain from a war, at least a massive war. This is why we have only seen large powers dominating small countries lately. We all know that a world war would be devastating for both sides so there is no point. Money is the new war.
China wouldn't want to go to war with anyone. They're too busy enjoying all the money they're making from the west. Russia is volatile but has lost it's technological edge and wouldn't risk kicking it off with NATO or anyone else big enough for a conflict to be considered WWIII. The EU have all but turned pacifist now so they won't be launching any offensives without very good reason. As for third world countries banding together.... I suppose it's possible. The middle east has plenty of reason to want to club the 'foreign invaders', by which I don't just mean the US and NATO but Russia too since there is still some resentment over the Afghanistan conflict among the extremist population. And they'd have little problem getting support from Russia's Muslim regions and which are even now getting rather antsy (I'm speaking to Chechnya and that part of the globe). If WWIII does happen, it'll be there.
Wouldn't work, the military budget of NATO + NATO allied countries such as Japan, South Korea, Israel, Morocco alone make up around 70% of global military spending.
I've been doing research on different theories and everyone seems to believe that the cause of WWIII will be in the Middle East. It's impossible to say when and how it will begin for sure but I believe the best theory is this. United States Africa Command was initiated for several reasons. The absolute main reason for AFRICOM though is to have the upper hand in a continental stake-out between the US and Russia/China. If we weren't there, Russia/China would be strategically building their overseas empire in the last piece of land on Earth that hasn't been ridden by international war. We happened to beat them to it, so we're doing it. Competition for strategic African land for military bases between NATO and Russia/China is slowly forming. Chinese military presence in Africa is already somewhat vast. Competition will become more and more tense until one day - snap. Once again, it's impossible to say what exactly will happen. But Africa will be the battleground of WWIII. NATO (Christian World)* vs. Russia, China, North Korea, and Muslim World* *For all you Nostradamus theorists
No one will ever join North Korea on the same side in a war. China and America will never go to war. Most of the Muslim world is actually allied with the US including Morocco, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Suadi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, Pakistan and Indonesia.
That alliance will only last as long as the oil does.... With exception to Pakistan because they're nuclear.... And yeah, N. Korea is pretty much on it's own.
I'm pretty sure N Korea will be the next big "thing"...although in this day and age I doubt it will be anywhere near as big as a "world war"...with the nukes that are available I think it will be short ..really short
No, in fact few of those countries have oil. Morocco, Jordan, Oman, Turkey, all have none or negligible amounts of oil. Saudi Arabia and Kuwait are in fact loaded with oil. Pakistan has nuclear weapons as you said.
China and North Korea are both communist though. Aren't they allies? This new Korean war that's about to happen could escalate things.
China is communist in name only, so would argue they're more capitalism than the US in some areas, Bill Gates 11 years ago got it right when he said "China isn't communist, it's capitalism at an amazing pace." China wants nothing to do with North Korea, the only reason it props up North Korea is because on one hand it doesn't want the current regime to fall and have a US friendly regime on its border, the other more important and practical one is it doesn't want a gigantic humanitarian crisis on its border if the current North Korean regime fails. Economy of China: Main export partners US 17.7%, Hong Kong 13.3%, Japan 8.1%, South Korea 5.2%, Germany 4.1% (2008) Main import partners Japan 13.3%, South Korea 9.9%, Taiwan 9.2%, US 7.2%, Germany 4.9% You really think China would risk it's new found prosperity to go to a war over a shit hole country like North Korea, losing it's largest trading partners in the process. *edit* A new Korean was would never be started by the south, South Korea has too much to lose. It'd be the north, and China could never even hypothetically defend taking the North's side, this isn't 1950 anymore. Realistically if China even got involved, they'd spin the story somehow to prop up their own regime in what is now North Korea, which in all honestly would be a huge improvement. China may be authoritarian, but they're not crazy. South Korea probably wouldn't object too much either, North Korea is in no state for reunification with the south.
The fact that the U.S. is getting most of all of it's imports from China, I think, is the only reason why we wouldn't go to war with them. So I agree with a lot of what you're saying. I think that if for some reason we stopped getting goods from China, we would have no problem going to war with them. It would take some type of nuclear holocaust for that to happen though.
Both Russia and China will start WWIII. In fact in may already be beginning in the Korean Peninsula. North Korea would not be popping off if China wasn't in the background. Although both countries will act independently the result will be the same, war on a scale that man has never seen. The bloodshed will be greater than all of the wars preceding it put together. No country will escape the results. The United States will most likely fight China first, then Russia. Not a pretty picture.
The Russian press is not particularly supportive of North Korea. See, for example, the English language Moscow Times opinion dated 27 May 2010: http://www.themoscowtimes.com/opinion/article/the-gambler-of-north-korea/406916.html The Moscow Times is publishing an opinion by Yoon Young-kwan, a former foreign minister of South Korea. That in itself says quite a bit, assuming there is an editorial relationship between Moscow Times and the Russian government, which is not a far-fetched idea. As Madcapsyd says, China has nothing to gain propping up Kim Jong Il either. Current speeches by Premier Wen Jiabao, who is visiting South Korea, emphasis continued cooperation between China, South Korea and Japan. See http://news.xinhuanet.com/english2010/china/2010-05/31/c_13324148.htm However it might for racial or cultural reasons consider intervening if the U.S. started wiping out the North Korean army using high tech air power. There is a high-level meeting going on right now between Chinese and Russian military leaders, according to the official news agency Xinhua, but the substance of the talks is not disclosed. It seems to me North Korea could solve part of its current problems if it radically downsized its huge army and allowed the soldiers to resume farming and raising food crops. But with a jerk like Kim Jong Il in power, that's not too likely.
chief threat not war at all. not that more wars can't or won't happen. the problem of course is that the threat of war is so sexy and exciting, that it makes the real problems go almost, if not unnoticed, then certainly and unreasonably trivialized. what combustion generated power and transportation, times human population expansion, compounded by human greed and short sightedness, regardless of ideology or any of the rest of that porkey pig, is doing to the environment that creates the air we breath, and everything else it takes to produce everything else we need to survive, is doing to the natural environment, is a bigger threat, to more people, all of humanity really, then any war there has ever been or will ever be.
