Its pretty in general thing to be atheist.....I mean like this atheist once tolled me " I only believe in things I see" how else can you get deep about that??? you pretty much eliminate any other rules or beliefs to your belief. What you guys got mass on Fridays or some shit?

Religion is much, much more than just 'believing god'. The fact that there are Atheist religions should have signified this to you. And I don't have to demonize religion, it's already done this itself.

Answering original question as asked, oh and btw, i no longer completely identify as atheist, but i remember, . . . here goes:

Because our culture/society (as are almost all) is obsessed and saturated with Judeo-Christian references. It is constantly in our faces. There is no escaping it. It is incredibly ubiquitous. Just open your eyes/ears and really look/listen . . . There are references to God, the Bible and Judeo-Christian values everywhere.

It's like asking the one (thinking) woman in the room filled with a huge number of men why she might bother so much with gender issues . . . the one African-American in a room filled with Europeans why she is bothered so much with race issues . . .

i actually think most atheists are very quiet and it is the rare (and young) one that will actively try to convert a believer away from faith. Atheists tend to know a tad about history and are aware that their/our position is tenuous at best even in a so-called "free" society. Watch the preachers on television, really watch. How long until you hear one say that free thinkers are dangerous? Not long for us (my husband and myself). Today they want to burn books (e.g. Quoran), tomorrow it can easily be people . . . this is the way of religions . . . i shudder to think across cultures and down through time how many have been killed, tortured or deprived of potential all in the name of "God." Atheists are aware of this, . . . combine this with a general common sense/belief in what they can see, . . . along with the death awareness that we all share AND no belief in an afterlife and you can see how i am right. They tend to stay quiet as a group.

It is the situation of the quiet minority who occasionally speaks up and gets accused of being uppity. . . .

you where talking about how athiest not only goes against Christianity but islam and is open in discussion in the USA but not like that in place like Mecca. So I brought up the Mecca to show that some athiest aren't as open to discussion of athiesism in other places like the USA where they would surely get some physical responses....

I never generalized Atheist, maybe in the example above you stated but I fail to put the word "some."

 

The reason us Atheists are sometimes vocal is because religion is being rammed down our throats and laws are being passed an enforced that are based solely on religion.

For example, at this moment a women in Iran is sitting on death row. Her crime? She committed adultery, although technically she didn't, because her husband was already dead when she slept with the other man. In my mind a victimless crime either way, but she is to be stoned to death because she committed a crime against Islam.

Christians are not immune to this repulsive idiocy either. Even if the Spanish inquisition and the dark ages are not contemporary enough for you, look at Uganda, where there are people trying to make being gay an offense punishable by death! After all, god hates us gays!

And there are plenty of fundamentalist fuckwits in the US to. For example, sodomy laws were on the books and enforced up until the 90s when the surprime court ruled them unconstitutional. And of course, most arguments against same sex marriage are religiously based.

If people just worshiped in private and minded their own business I wouldn't care, to each their own. I have no problem with peaceful tolerant religious people. But when your imaginary friend starts telling me how to live my life, I'm going to speak out!
