I have to write a theme for my english class hooray... It's about what it means to be an american and what makes people american, but i can't think of anything... so anybody help me out!!! What do you think?
I think it's a great idea! I think what you should do is ask a few people about the value of being an American. My suggestion, take it for what it's worth, is to contact a few people from each group- veterans (disabled in combat are really good to ask) from different wars (maybe one from the Korean conflict, one or two from WW2, one from Nam and one or two from PG1 & PG2), a hippy or two, a couple documented immigrants, to get a wide spread of views. Put it all together and then "filter it" by chopping it down to the essentials your teacher wants. Hope that helps!
Great suggestions Logan 5 To me, being american isn't as important then being a responsible trustworthy individual. But most people associate american with patriotism. Henry David Thoreau said... patriotism is a maggot in the head. I believe HDT was an ideal american. You can glean alot about americans from his works. His book is called Waldon and On Civil disobedience.
I would certainly mention the constitution and it's effect on all of us. Maybe go thru the bill of rights and compare our system(or what it's supposed to be) with other countries.
I've compared them before, and the funny thing is, a number of countries have the same rights enumerated in their constitutions as we do. Venezuela, for example. Except they allowed the laws to have authority over the constitution. So in a sense while they have their rights, they didn't protect them. And now they are dictated by law.
Hi Rev J Another way to view this is that patriotism is a fabrication of the driving forces to distract and prevent us from realizing individual divinity. as in Namaste' We could come up with a hundred reasons for patriotism but none of them will benefit society and does flatly destroy community.
Nothing works better than brainstorming. Just write down anything that comes to mind and pretty soon you'll catch a train of thought that has a special meaning to you.
