Hiya Folks, hows it going ? Been thinking about just getting a bag of bare essentials together and just dissapearing for a while, any of you guys ever felt like this and even more interesting anyone ever acted apon it. I know it sounds like a romantic idea even a dream that some people like to think about when there fed up of the same old shit but is it actually possible? i'd love to do this because i just dont feel i can be myself living the life im in just now, you know? i just want to let my hair down and go get a taste of life, im known for disapearing, seriously ive lived in all kinds of crazy places lol but this all just seems like a primer for a bigger adventure i feel like im being drawn towards embarking apon. I know meybe this just sounds crazy but surely some of you older hippies have abandoned the mundane in some point in your life and im not just talking about the hours youve spent tripping lol anybody just got up and left before? id love to get some advice from anyone thats done this. Obviously i can realise its not just a case of get up and go theres a wee bit planning to do and things will be really hard at times but i just think the spirituall rewards and carachter building that doing something like this would acheive would far outweigh the negatives ie not having a place to stay at times etc is there anyone in the uk done this before? id love to get into europe and like work for accomodation/food whatever you know just something like that, i think it would be amazing just travelling about doing that meeting loads of people, the excitement of the uncertainty the awe of people kindness to the lonely traveller lol fuck it get back to me anyway if your feeling what im talking about
Over on the other side of the pond , it's a more common practice by some of those into alternative culture than most of Europe...course there are the Romas...but.... Here, many get a vehicle they can sleep in when the weather gets too rough and because relying on others all the time to get around (unless you're going to do it all on the feet), does not bode well for those of independent spirit. We also have large stretches with few people and a more accepting clime in the general and especially the alternative minded. It is not an easy life...but rewarding....did it a lot during the younger years (a very different time....maybe now it's not the same). Most just like to dream....done my share of that too....Doing always puts the experience in the Real and give one the talking rite for those who want to share....be surprised how many just hold their times of walkabout as a treasured , private memory. Do it....or not But a dream acted on takes on life , whereas a dream just thought about changes constantly without the experiential data to go with it. Blessings Namaste
Like oldwolf said, I don't know if the times now will support the same lifestyle we had back then. My first up and leave trip was going to the Atlanta Pop Festival from New Orleans. I gave up my apartment and went with three friends in the VW Bug. Then one friend and I drove from there to San Francisco. But I eventually ended up back in New Orleans to work, save up my money for my next adventure. Met my crazy partner who pushed us to leave our homes and go to Central America a couple times then to India a couple times. These were not just vacations, we gave up our apartment and were living on the road. Always coming back to New Orleans or Miami to find another place to settle and work to save for the next trip. I still have the feeling but with age you realize that it's not that easy to just pick up and go like you do in your twenties. I guess ya get lazy with comfort. Once all I owned was in a backpack, then it expanded to a VW Beetle. Now it would take a box truck for all my stuff. So, if you don't have a lot of stuff, I would say take off. Just try to get some travel money together so you don't starve. I hitched from SF back to NO and actually met some ppl on the way who put me up and fed me. (It helps to be young and cute)
hey i feel you on your behavior..for myself im looking for an adventure and leave my house since i cannot take it but i would love to find someone or somewhere to be and live a hippie life.
Save some money and travel with music festivals or a carnival. You can always camp out in the woods or stay at shelters. Free food or soup kitchens are in every town. Vehicles are ideal for sleeping but need money for gas. I used to travel every summer with the dead and went to school the rest of the year. I learned so much about life and myself. Met so many crazy beautiful characters I'll never forget them or that free time of my life. Now I'm planning to tour the world on a sailboat.
Got my kids raised. Decided I was going to Alaska. Didn't know a soul up there, but its' been 12 years now and a hell of an adventure.
I'm doing this for a short time. I'm going to France for 2 months but who knows I might stay longer. I'm gonna be staying on farms where I get free food and a room in exchange for 4 hours of farm work a day. Its part of this organization called WWOOF
Chris, a lot of years ago I didn't have a home as such (different from being homeless) just travelled about in Britain. Now, many years later, i have a base here in Spain but just do what I do. My partner and I waited until our youngest daughter left art college, sold everything and move on with 2 rucksacks. Anything can be done if your mind is in the right place! IMO planning kinda spoils it.
Walked away with a guitar and $10 in 1969 and never got tired of traveling. Tis true what Shale said, the longer ya live, the more stuff ya(think) ya need. Once we were called free spirits, now we are called homeless, even if ya own a home. Don't believe it is about a home, I believe they(society)want to keep all their pigeons in a specified hole. Like Willie Nelson says, Even when ya lose, your still a winner,at least ya got the makings of a song.
One of the easiest ways to do this in Canada is to ride the rails. One can get on a train bed/car (not the passenger type, the kind that hauls goods) and ride it from one end of the country, back and forth. Many people have done this. It's loud, you get covered in dust and dirt, but you're always moving, you've got somewhere to sleep and you get to see the whole country. If I were thinking of rambling, in any country, I'd look into this first. Op, look around and read to see if this is an option in your country, if you decide you're still going to do it.
My husband talks sometimes about moving out into the woods (there are no woods here in the desert, but. ) and building a cabin, starting a little garden/farm. Just seceding from society. It's the dream. Right now we're just staying put, we're in a pretty good place right now. Who knows what's down the road? Any time we've moved (9 times in 3 years) it was a decision that was made that day, that week at the most. We just took it into our heads to leave, packed up our shit within 24 hours and headed off to the next place. My biggest comfort in life is that I don't know what tomorrow will bring. I'm sure this'll change when I have kids..hell, having my 2 dogs have changed our roaming habits a little bit, now that we have 2 extra living beings to think about.

I like to think of running away somewhere as an escape from the life that defines you into one that makes you actually realise who you are. Or something insightful like that.
