I have a question about locker-room behavior. At our local YMCA there is a single dressing room for males, of all ages. Most men and boys seem to be comfortable with their own nakedness, as well as that of the others, but a few do seem uncomfortable and will even do such things as shower while still wearing their bathing suits.

And a few fathers will send their young sons out of the locker-room while they, themselves, undress and shower. It is pretty obvious to anyone around that these men do not want their sons to see them naked, even though the boys will see other men naked. Also the boys are aware that other boys will be in the shower while their father is naked and that the father does not seem to object to THEM seeing him naked. I feel they are sending a very negative message to their sons which says "Other boys may see me naked, but You may not!"

Am I the only one who thinks this is not the way to handle this situation?

    You are not alone.
It sounds very much like a self-esteem, lack of maturity issue. Kids will be kids and they will in these occasions be shy and self-conscious and communal showers will be the place where this is most noticeable. That's normal. In time, this self-consciousness will wear off and self-esteem will increase with maturity. Whether or not kids then progress to social nudity is purely conjectural. It seems too, the father has a distorted perspective on his own body image. Is he hiding something? A couch session might be a good 'next step' to sort him out.

Once, in the locker room, I was coming from the shower, naked of course, and drying-off as I went to my locker. There was a father and small boy, probably no more than three years old, on the bench nearby. The boy looked at me and declared "You gots a big penis!"

The father was embarrassed and tried to scold the boy, but I came to his rescue and pointed out that I had big feet too, which was my way of telling them both that they boy had done nothing wrong by admitting that he had looked at my penis. The father gave me a look of relieved appreciation.

It is normal for young boys to look at the "privates" of whatever men are there. Any man who is uncomfortable with boys seeing him naked should not go there. But most important of all, young boys should not be made to feel guilty or somehow "bad" if they do look at the sexuall apparatus of the men who are there.

As young as I can remember, no one was uptight at the locker room of a pool I used to go to. In fact, any boys getting ready for a free swim with a parent or guardian seemed a lot more comfortable.
When I was 10 I started to get uncomfortable around all the nudity but I was in there without any friends. At any rate this cleared by the time I was 13 and I attribute it to the fact that there were older role models in my swimming class by that time.

Doing that to your son wouldn't be healthy, IMHO it would cause a hangup later on for sure.

at our pool the change area is a huge room and the showers are a second room that is also the way to the pool....its like showering in a fuckin busy hallway and as each child walks around the little privacy wall they immediately are staring my johnson right in the eye...the literally pass 36 inches from peter as their dads push them by...and many dads bring their little girls into the mens locker room so I shower with my suit ON out if a sense of politeness to these kids

I don't really think that occasionally undressing to shower in a public place really classifies as nudism, but it's as good a forum as any.

I think that in certain situations with adolescents it is fine to send them out while their fathers shower. But in a situation where EVERYONE is nude, it shouldn't matter as much. That said, I would always go home to shower instead of showering at a gym or other public place anyway.

I was never comfortable showering nude at the pool or being nude in the change room. Every time I went there was always some person(s) staring around at others junk. I'm totally fine with nudity and I'm totally fine with the dimensions of my own body, however I don't need to be stared at by wet naked men.

I'm not sure it classifies as nudism either. There are not children at the gym I go to at the times I am there.

Surely the locker room with its showers is one of few places where being naked should be normal. Lets face it you can't get a proper shower without being completely naked. There is a tendency (in the UK anyway) to move to Unisex locker rooms with cubicles and a communal shower area and believe me showering in your costume though possible is not satisfactory. It is only the rules and regulations that stop me baring all though I am getting quite adept at discretely washing inside my speedos.
