Tell your brother that ignorant cocksuckers should be denied the right to free speech.

He sounds like a real gem.

That is the way it should be...it would get pretty complicated though...there'd have to be different rates for everything from smokers and drug users...people who do stupid things like shydiving and mountain climbing etc...

I like the way some states have started charging for rescuing these adrenaline junkies who fall off mountains[IMG]

If I started gaining weight I would start exercising and eating healthier to get the weight off... but that is just me. But I don't think ANYONE should be denied health care.

there;s nothing healthy or attractive about being morbidly obese. the fact some encourage it is appaling too. http://www.clevelandleader.com/node/13355 and her husband sees no wrong in this and encourages it also. she's giving her offspring the wrong ideas about healthy image. even the ancients knew how unhealthy and attractive this is. this is why none of the classical sculptures showed those who look like jabba the hut. with epidemic levels of diabetes including childhood diabetes, this is no laughing matter and goes far beyond just mere asthetics. nothing shallow about being concerned about it either.

If fat people should not get health care, should people that drink or do drugs not get health care either? How about STD's, should people be punished with no healthcare cause they fuck too many sluts??????

There are ALLOT of unhealthy behaviors that lead to health problems not so easily noticed by the human eye. Ask the asshole who got herpes banging a stranger while drunk, only to go to the doctor to find out he has a non-functional liver from alcohol and lung cancer from cigarettes.

If they make fat folks pay more, we ALL should pay more. I smoke pot and drink, not the healthiest activities.

if people are happy with their bodies then good for them. seems like most people aren't though. in the end if people want to be unhealthy that's their choice. i don't know why other people care so much. the strain from fat people is probably more from medications than hospital. the number one selling drugs in this country are cholesterol lowering drugs, something that is mostly modifiable!!

i think there is as much of a problem in saying that anorexic people are ideal as saying that fat people are normal/healthy.

Thanks for starting this thread... I really enjoyed reading everyone's response.

Fair healthcare doesn't really have a good definition. Does fair healthcare mean that everyone pays for what they use? Then the obese should pay for more - in the same way that in Canada, excessive taxes on cigarettes help fund treatment. Or does fair treatment mean that everyone should get treated the same, and how much they pay should be relevant to how much they can pay - ie: income.

I lean much further to the latter... And as much as it is difficult to watch people treat their bodies poorly, we all have flaws and it doesn't seem fair to target this one group that is frankly already treated badly in so many ways.

Secondly, it is important to differentiate between "overweight" but healthy (which isn't really overweight at all), and morbidly obese.

Discussing obesity does tend to bring out the worst in people, sometimes.

That's a good point Sitka! We should be more clear in the thread. I'd like to point out that when my brother was making those comments he didn't just direct it to fat people (i'm assuming that most of you view "fat" as obese, or very large) he was also directing it at just overweight people. People with a little cushion for the pushin in general. These people don't require medications or strain our health care (for that specific reason). He was making snide comments at the fact that we should all be trying to be in our absolute best physical state. My brother goes to the gym and isn't in perfect shape. He points this out and sais that he to needs to work to be at his BEST.

I just think it's bullshit. If you've got a little fat on your ass. Own it. Not everyone wants to make the cover of playboy and thas cool. :)

I don't think "fat" people are a strain on our health care. Yes those with high cholesterol need medication, there are medical fees and it is detrimental to your health to carry to much excess weight: like being at risk for diabetes. Alot of things everyone does is quite detrimental to their health. I think most people do some damage to their body in one form or another. Just drinking and doing drugs is more acceptable in today's society then being fat.
You've all made very clear points and shared your opinions on the topic.
However, here's what i'm getting at. Let's say a fat girl makes the cover of a magazine(not obese or anorexic just an overweight girl), she's not airbrushed, she's not wearing makeup and she's smiling. I think we've been brainwashed to believe that this is not acceptable. You have to look a certain way to make the cover of a magazine (depending on the magazine but in most cases). What if this girl loves herself the way she is. She enjoys being outside, she has a great relationship with her family, she's working towards her future career and she gets some exercise. But she chooses a hamburger instead of a salad. And her daily meal choices have lead her to be overweight.

Is she disgusting? I really don't think so...my brother used such a broad word. What is fat?...I guess "fat" is different to everyone. When does the fat that is on your body classify you.

Personally, I've been down the road of an eating disorder. I fainted infront of a bus stop, I'd eat 330 max calories. Workout for atleast 30 minutes to an hour everyday. It was unhealthy.
I've been bigger, not big big but you know I was, and then I changed it.
So after some reflection i've come to a point in my life to see the best in everyone.

Yes it is unhealthy to be very overweight.
It is also unhealthy to become obsessive about attaining others approval.
    It's stressful to be either.
If you're healthy, you get in some exercise, you're loving life.
    I couldn't be happier for you. I think that's a beautiful thing
Because it takes a strong person. To love themselves despite not being a size 2 in todays society.

I just wish you all could see it that way.
How do you not know these "fat" people aren't trying to lose the weight.
When you see them walking down the street, how do you know they weren't on their way to the gym.
I just think all this judgement is terrible.
They may be fat, or overweight, or not at their prime yet.
But chances are their a hell of alot happier not giving a shit, and loving their curves then trying soooo hard to make the cut.

I just think everyone has something to offer, everyone's beautiful.
    You're beautiful.

It’s not that fat people put a strain on the healthcare system it’s the fact that there’s nowhere for them to hide so openly and casually flaunt their depravity, i.e. “I can’t stop eating because I’m a PIG, I refuse to exercise because it’s too STRENUOUS, and I refuse to eat HEALTHY because the food often doesn't taste as good, .....

You know, some people actually have medical conditions - thyroid problems, medications they take, etc that make them not fit for our fake ass hollywood standards. Not everyone is guzzling gallons of HFCS and Transfat. Although, I'd say the majority are.

And honestly, for the majority, I blame the crooked FDA and Department of Agriculture.

I went to the store (with an insanely thin friend) and we were on one of the many junk food isles. She was looking at "Fruit Gushers" and she said "Ooo! Vitamin c, my son needs vitamin c!" She grabbed them and put them into the cart and asked what I was going to get for my kids. I said "Fruit..."

Fat people aren't the only ones that are ignorant about nutrition and health. Their body just can't metabolize the shit like some others can.
