In my personal experience there would appear to be three basic "bad trips".

1- The harsh self revelatory trip. The trip that takes you on an unrelenting review of your life and all your foibles, faults and sins. These can often be the most distressing and hardest to "snap" out of.
These tend to be the type of "bad" trip I have encountered mostly. While excruciatingly unpleasant at the time, these experiences have also helped to facilitate some of the most beneficial personal growth.

This first type can be a bit harder to face and reconcile. It's pretty hard to hide from yourself, and psychedelics can introduce us to parts of ourselves that we wish never saw the light of day.

2-The paranoid delusion trip. This type of bad trip is marked by an obsession over a thought or occurrence which has been completely blown out of proportion and relevance. Also an inability to discern between the thoughts and events as being triggered by a drug or being real.
I think everyone has known or heard of someone that experienced one of these type of bad trips. They can range from the annoying looping negative thoughts (the type I get hit with from shrooms most often) to ones in which the person is actively acting out the delusion. You know, hiding from imagined pursuers, Thinking your being watched or others have access to your thoughts, etc. I know I have seen a couple of trip reports that would fall into this category.
My most recent was on shrooms when my 16 year old was at a party and I got it stuck in my head that she was somehow in danger there. Rationally I knew it was a ridiculous notion, but emotionally I could not shake it until she arrived home again.
Personally I have never been struck with the full blown delusional trip, I have always been aware of the drugs effects.

Often these trips are easier to get over and reconcile mainly because upon being sober most will recognize how exaggerated their perceptions were.

3-The "you ain't in Kansas any more Dorothy" type of trips. These type of "bad" trips most often occur only to individuals that are very set in their ways and are certain they have reality all figured out. Often the complete loss of all the usual "markers" and test of real vs unreal are challenged as is the very concept of "reality".
I have known a few that have had such experiences. Most will just treat it as everything else in life they don't agree with, just force it out and pretend it doesn't exist, or just attribute it all to just "being high".
These are the people that I have seen have the hardest time with psychedelics as they try to control and direct the experience. More often than not, a person with this type personality will NOT try psychedelics a second time if their world is rocked beyond the comfort of control zone, and usually derive the least from the experience.

These type of experiences can be for some a life shattering event if they are not able to reconcile the experience with their personal world paradigm. I think a good deal of persons needing psychiatric treatment after a bad psychedelic experience would fall into this category.

So what type of bad experiences have you experienced and do they fall within these categories or should we add more?

I have only tripped once, it wasn't a bad one, but I have to say a week later, I was at a show and all the sudden I felt a little trippy like I had taken shroomz again. There was a guy next to me who had a shirt wrapped around his neck and I kinda freaked out because it kinda turned into a snake when I looked at it. I know that is normal sometimes after taking hallucinogenics to kinda have episodes a few days later but it wasn't fun for me I hate snakes lol!

Nothing binds a father and a son more closely than the truth behind the decapitated hooker in the rec room..

One trip I remember as a kid, and I was under the steps doing something thats not commonly a psychedelic but it was a mixture of things. White out, and some Xylene ..
Everything was covered with numbers, and I could see like this stamp thing, stamping digits on things.. It was hella binary .. never sniffed the xylene again.s.. :D

Never had a bad trip. Out of curiosity, I've TRIED to induce bad trips a couple of times by watching, looking at, or listening to some overly intense shit or putting myself in some intense situations or tripping during stressful/depressing times in my life, but none of that has ever induced a bad trip.

    And so the curiosity remains.

The only time I've had a bad trip was when I took a mystery substance on a blotter. I took 4 hits, an hour later I remember listening to some bluetech and the cd started skipping. Long story short, couldnt figure out how to make it stop, nor could any of my friends, and it made my brain felt like it was also a broken record, everything just kept repeating.

The next 4 hours I dont remember anything, apparently I would say the same things over and over. The only thing I remember was when I finally started to come down music sounded normal again. When I was losing my mind the music just sounded like very annoying bass.

I had this happen to me one other time, tripping so hard that music just sounded all terrible and bassy. The second time was when I took 2 hits of blotter from 3 different types of blotter. The lesson learned was never to mix your acid hits like some people mix their ecstasy tabs. I just dont trust the quality of product anymore.

i have had all the types described and more. i personally, have found the delusional one to be the hardest to recover from, but i was very young (21) at the time. i have found that all of them and all types produce remarkably useful material that cannot help but seem to promote personal growth if i am just willing to honestly look at it.

i have found the life-review/quit lying to yourself trips to be surprising, helpful, and things that give me serious pause. Once during a DMT breakthrough i found myself sitting around a type of game board with a bunch of what i would call highly critical psychotherapist entities. On this board was laid out a timeline of my life - past, present and even extending into my future. In various places on this board were "pieces" that had what i think of as the classic DMT/self-transforming machine appearance of this space. The pieces were highly synesthetic in multiple modalities and clearly symbolically represented key events and choices within my life. i got a strange lesson on the topic of "authenticity" by those entities that will never be forgotten.

Also, there is a type that seems unique to DMT for me that comes with the crazy ass body-load and sudden spike in bp/heartrate. It is a kind of physical panic attack. i know from my frontal lobes down to the core of my soul what's going on and why. i even find it kind of theoretically funny. But, i am in trouble at the time - panting, hallucinating very hard/heavily, trying NOT to stand up, trying NOT to yell/scream. Usually, when this happens (probably about once every 50-60 trips or so) i get a lot of comfort from my sitter and my cats (what at the time tend to look like the most extreme of Louis Wain's paintings) and things often stabilize within 5-10 minutes, especially as the physiological reactions die back a bit.

Finally, the previous poster mentioning paranoid delusion on 2CE reminds me of my own difficult 2CE experience - not delusional or paranoid but opening up a kind of ugly lack of inhibition that brought only the mean, hateful, ugly and rude aspects of myself to the fore. Bleech!

    Peace & Love,
    Spicey Cat

I have had the first type on LSD and 4-aco-dmt, but it was only made really bad because setting was garbage, if that had been taken care of with respect it would have been just a good introspective trip.

I had a bad time on MDMA once because I stepped into a mall for 10 minutes and was overwhelmed by the negative emotions of people all around me, I was so attuned to it that it just floored me, how angry and sad most people are throughout their day.

Never had a bad trip as such, but didn't want to go any further with a journey on Salvia once, relatively recently, and pulled myself out before being taken down to the depths by two giant Pythons... it is something i intend to revisit early next year as i think it was just my fear pulling me away... a fear i would like to conquer...

My one and only "BAD" trip was my first trip ever, on about 20mg 2c-i at 17-18 years old. I don't think it fits into any of these categories, as it was spun out of control by external events that would have been difficult to handle sober. I guess the closest it comes to is the paranoid delusion because all I could think was "oh fuck, oh shit, we're fucked, oh fuck..." and it turned out the outcome wasn't quite as severe as it could have been. Still, though...

I've had difficult trips that certainly can be described by all the categories above, but I wouldn't consider them bad. Great descriptions though, PB :)

i've had difficult parts of trips that fit #1 and #2, but never a full on bad trip. most difficult was on shrooms, that was probably some sort of self analysis that i never integrated. also, on 2ce i actually thought that i would never come down.

my salvia breakthrough does not fit in those 3 categories, but it was pretty "BAD"

    Nice responses.
I hate to use the term "bad trip", but did so because it is a universally understood phrase.:p
Asking people if they have ever had an uncomfortable experience just didn't sound right.

I agree with Spicy; most "bad" trips can often yield the most ultimately beneficial experiences.
but even then, they sure can be hell.
