Greetings brothers and sisters i was curious on which school is most hippie-oriented out of these three: 1. Green Mountain College; Poultney, VT 2. Warren Wilson College; Asheville, NC 3. Northland College; Ashland, WI I am not basing my decision on this i just think itd be nice to be around like-minded individuals in college. One Love
off the top of my head i have no ideal. a "square" college or school would be any that are traditional. a "hippie" college or school would be any that are alternative. i went to a alternative "hippie" college. thomas a. edision state college. i strongly advise you, that you go to the website of ten speed press! ten speed press was founded back in the late 1960's by a group of freaks who wanted to bring the "hippie" philosophy of 'empowering the people' to the masses. at the ten speed press website, you will a section that deals with education, colleges, schools etc. CHECK IT OUT! then write down title of books that look like they would help you out. i most strongly suggest you look over any books by john bear! now, check out the website of your local public library. see if they have a copy of'bear's guide to non-traditional colleges.' if your local public library does not have a copy. check out the inter-library loan department of your local public libaray, ask them to order a copy of it for you. there is no charge for this service. buying books cost a lot of money after a while! this will save you from that expense. in bear's guide you will find out how "hippie" those colleges you asked about are. don't be shocked if you find out none of them are "hippie" at all! here is the link to ten speed press website below. www.tenspeed.com
Def Warren Wilson. I went there for 3 years. When u go to VT you start getting rednecks and what not. Warren -Wilson - - - -- go there! atleast visit! I am soooooo glad I went there, everyone there just seems like a big family community. You have to visit! It's a work college so people work, study and party hard. Beeeeeeaauuuttiful Area!! Go there you'll fall in love. Bubba Stihl partying
Did hippies make a come back I haven't heard about? Have you tried visiting said schools? Seems it would be a good way to find out..
I just left Warren Wilson. If your idea of hippies is middle-class white kids with dreads and no shoes, then there you go. If you are fine with eating shitty food, working for no pay, paying insane amounts for weed, and going to the same dance party every weekend with the same people you saw last weekend, then go ahead. I was unable to make any friends at Warren Wilson because none of those kids were interested in growing up. They were still kids. The girl across the hall from me got $250 a month from her parents for "allowance." I was on the building services crew, meaning I was a janitor, and half the kids on my crew left early every shift. Guess what that means? Nasty living conditions where everyone is sick all the time. Some people really loved it there. I did not. There are some great teachers, but there are also some very shitty ones. I was unable to make friends there because 1) I am a Christian and 2) I prefer small, intimate groups to big parties where everyone gets drunk and fucks somebody. The college is probably one of the "greenest" in the country, but all the talk about working for world peace and acceptance is just that: talk.
Warren Wilson definitely. I live here and you can tell someone that goes to UNCA vs someone that goes to Warren Wilson on appearance and demeanor.
If you want a truly "hippie oriented" college check out Humboldt State in northern, CA and Evergreen in Olympia, WA. I went to HSU for a little bit and it's a great school. I have friends at Evergreen and they love it.
Dude Siren Songs, Wow ya good thing you left. You know why prices of weed were so high? Because its dank brother, atleast when I was there it was coming from 2 friends, one from CALI and one from British Columbia, it was dank, it was expensive, I didn't mind givin my friend 10 bucks extra for the hussle. Middle Class White Kids - ya you'll find them at every college, that's what college is or atleast who can afford it. Ya I knew some kids at Wilson that got allowences but they figured they work at the college and would get that money instead of putting it toward tuition so there parents would give them the money they earned while working there. Growing up - Man you didn't meet anyone did you? You have any Senior friends? Not growing up I mean everyone goes to school full time and works 3 hrs a day and has to do volunteering! I know most of my friends worked hard try going over to Landscaping or NRC and tell them about growing up. Sure I agree that many of the students work hard and party hard and some party harder but get their shit done. Everyone's sick - ya dude you were in Sunderland wheren't YOU! It's just a big building filled with people, young people sleeping around, drinking, puking, doing what every other FRESHMAN college dorm does, except Sunderland is the biggest dorm on campus hence sickness is given my friend. Work - Fun- Ya well every college you go to will make "big parties" and by "big" did you mean less than 150 people because thats the biggest I saw at wilson besides the bubbas. I thought most parties colleges have are every weekend and have hundreds of people not a hundred or less! hahaha. And if you prefer smaller groups Wilson is the best place going. Go out to Dogwood or the fields, go into any portion of the woods or trails, change your job, go on a walk and you'll certainly find nice, outgoing FRIENDS. Seems like you didn't make the best of your pessimistic position. People going into college as freshman being 18 are f+++ in young, some people take longer, but seriously I would have stayed at Wilson if I were you, there's more people there that work hard for their stay than any other college I visited since I left Wilson for a job. PS WILSON
U.C. Santa Cruz is fairly hippie-cool. At least in the 1980's there was a town ordinance that said no building could be taller than the tallest tree in the community.
Even outside the college I would think you should be able to find something interesting in Asheville... The middle class white kid comment is rather ironic since I assume this board is probably made up of 90% current or former middle class white kids.
haha true thAT i'm one ove 'em, although middle class is becoming poor class i kno that too. There's a reason the service based economy is overgrowing...
I think every college is going to have at least a faction of like-minded hippie inspired individuals to spend time and conversation with...but I would love to check out a school where the majority falls into this category.
I was searching for similar colleges and warren wilson was alsot one of my top choices, only second to college of the atlantic. i suggest having a gander at thier website too... coa.edu
