Is it that odd these days?
There are plenty of perfectly functional (well, and less so of course) unmarried parents, here at least.

If you want to know about the benefits of marriage, ask the gay people in the US fighting for their rights at this very moment.

P.S. I feel bad for your wife.

I agree that there is no incentive to get married, for anyone.

I would instead propose an incentive program, along the lines of you receive a toaster when making the commitment. There would be an extended warranty on that and when it malfunctions, you are allowed to exchange it for a new one.

    That should work! :)

Isn't this thread about the OP's sentiments on welfare, taxes and women's rights?

...people shouldn't be nostalgic for times before they didn't live through.

Ok chill out people, the OP is just asking peoples opinions. He didn't say anything about wanting to have a slave at home doing stuff for him or that he regrets getting married.

The only benefit I see to getting married is making the woman happy, if that was indeed what she really wanted. That alone might be enough for me, depending upon how I felt about her. But really marriage seems to be just a custom, a ritual, and legally binding contract.

How is love an incentive of marriage? Are you implying that one has to get married to be loved?

I assumed the terse answer would be appropriate.

Marriage is just a ceremony in which to claim eternal love for someone in front of your friends and family. My point wasn't that people who aren't married can't be in love, it was that asking for the benefits misses the point.

you should probably stop worrying about why men have no "incentive" to get married (like its a record deal or something) and worry about why no woman is going to have any "incentive" to marry you

i even heard women can vote now...sheesh

    True.

It's like asking for the benefits of having children. If you have to ask, it's probably not for you.

    We've been real people since 1928. :D

i've been wondering a similar thing myself, what incentive is there for a woman to get married anymore. if i want kids i can IVF, i can clean, cook, work, for myself. my house would always be tidy, dinner would always be on the table. i have contraptions to open things im not strong enough to open and i can pay people to fix my car or fence or whatever.

why spend years working to keep someone clean, fed, happy when after they get bored and cheat on you with their secretary you're left with no thanks and stretch marks. and all the other men are either married or only interested in woman 30yrs younger than you. being a stay home mum/wife is a massive job in itself. it doesn't get half the respect it should.

By far, the number one cause of divorce is marriage.
