I have a question, and I've looked around on the net but I can't be sure because I'm not sure of the name... These little miniature strawberry looking weeds that grow abundantly around my house: well, I was wondering if they were poisonous... They always called them Strawberry Flowers around here but I saw the above picture on a website where it was called a Wood Strawberry. I just wanted to make sure it was the same thing because that website said they aren't poisonous and that there are in fact no berries that look like strawberries that are poisonous. Thanks for any help
They actually produce fruit that appear to be Strawberries, do they ? If so, they sound like what I - from a UK perspective - know as Wild Strawberries, because basically thats what they are... the originals that our cultivated varieties came from. You can also buy seeds for a miniature variety called Alpine Strawberries, which is basically the same thing. Again from a UK perspective, ours are Ok to eat, usually very sharp taste but more strawberryness, if you know what I mean.
Well...certainly look like wild Strawberries to me...leaves, flowers and fruit. Are you brave enough to try one when they ripen ?
Well, yes. I think I am brave enough. Thanks, I just needed someone else telling me to go for it. Kind of like you want to do something but you don't until you're dared. haha
These things are not really strawberries. They are obviously related. Not poisonous, but they are bland and mealy, nothing to write home about. Latin name: Duchesnia indica also called False Strawberry, Mock Strawberry, or Wild Strawberry
The pics are awesome. Do these berries really taste like strawberries? They seem to be a bit more towards bitterish side. Is it so? I want to put my teeth in one of those berries right away ........
Not much flavor to them. There is such a thing as a true wild strawberry. The flowers are white, not yellow. Genus is Fragaria. I've seen them along the Blue Ridge Parkway in the open meadows.
