Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, the legendary creator of Gonzo journalism, would have been 73 years old today.

Thompson's Gonzo style of reporting involved immersing himself in the action to such an extent that he became the central figure in his own stories.

He was known for his savagely uncompromising writing style; his heroic intake of marijuana, psychedelics, and other drugs; his almost complete contempt for authority and rules; and his anarchist views.

Thompson became best known for his 1971 book, Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, a strongly autobiographical tale of a drug-fueled Hollywood-to-Sin-City road trip with his 300-pound Samoan attorney.

"We had two bags of grass, 75 pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine and a whole multicolored collection of uppers, downers, laughers, screamers.. Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can. The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge and I knew we'd get into that rotten stuff pretty soon . . ." ~ Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, 1971

The book was later made into a hit movie starring Johnny Depp as Thompson.

His other books include Hell's Angels, Fear And Loathing On The Campaign Trail '72, The Great Shark Hunt, The Curse of Lono, Generation Of Swine, Songs Of The Doomed, Better Than Sex, and Kingdom Of Fear.

Born on July 18, 1937, he died on February 20, 2005, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Ahh shit, I knew there was an underlying reason I wanted to fuck off on work today and stay home and dose, besides just wanting to fuck off and dose...
