My first Grateful Dead CD was not a CD atall, it was a tape of Steal Your Face in a black box where the tape slides out one side. I still have it, I think, but when I changed to CDs my first Dead purchase was American Beauty

Glad you weren't turned off by Steal Your Face -- widely regarded as the worst piece of shit the Dead ever did -- even Phil says so.

The first album I bought was Blues For Allah, totally fell in love (I had already gotten some cds from the library so it was completely new) except, until I saw Furthur play "The Music Never Stopped" I wasn't a big fan of that song...difference between live & studio, always dig that funky tune now.

Skeletons in The Closet got me hooked on the Dead, but now I never listen to it haha.

Hi Deadheads! I'm a Brit and only discovered them in '95 after Jerry died.. first album "American Beauty".. I was totally blown away that a record could sound so good, fresh, melodic..

Biggest regret.. in hindsight.. was in Frisco '93, some dude says "the Grateful Dead are playing this weekend" or sth like that I said "who are they?" I'd never heard of them before.. only afterwards I was like "Oh shit!"

IMO they are better than our very own Pink Floyd.. maybe the nearest thing we have to the Dead, Jethro Tull perhaps..

The Dead aren't just a band, they're a conscience, a way of life, a total musical enigma..

you got rock, pop, blues, funk, country, electronic, freestyle.. they really are the ultimate

I bought "the very best of the grateful dead" and listened to that for about a week and then I found their first album while walking down the road. Who would throw that out their window??

Well, their first album was done while they were taking a lot of DMT (except Pig Pen). So, it came out just a wee bit weird.

    I've got 8 albums..

American Beauty 10/10 one of the best albums ever
Workingman's Dead - almost as good, ride that train..
Terrapin Station - the first track is an epic
Blues for Allah - mystic inshallah!
Wake of the Flood - cool as cool
From the Mars Hotel - Scarlet Begonias, Unbroken Chain..
Live Dead - legendary.. St Stephen with a rose, in and out of the garden he goes..
Infrared Roses - it's a re-hash of live show material, not a studio album

I just bought Flashback with the Grateful Dead from the $5 dollar Wall*Mart CD bin and I don't regret the purchase. This is a groovy CD! Can't wait to pick up more of their stuff in the future. Anybody got any reccomendations?

I have a funny story about this I was 12 or 13 years old and I was just getting into them when I bought my first 'dead' CD. It turned out it wasn't really the dead but a 3 disc compilation of bluegrass and jazz covers of GD hits. At first I was disappointed but a year or two later I fell in love with it and it opened me up to a lot of new artists.

Swingin to/ Pickin on the dead volumes 1 +2, highly recommended.

Europe 72 was my first CD by them and I got it back in 89 when I was working at a record store. Jack Straw put the hook into me and I haven't been the same since. When they released the whole Europe 72 tour in that suitcase two years ago I was all over that like flies on stank.
