Jaywalking laws do not stop people from jaywalking period. Marijuana's illegality does not stop millions from getting high daily.

That isn't the issue, it was if the laws have a valid reason to exist. They do.

Actually in this city, it encourages people to pay attention to where they walk.
It is part of the culture here. The announced policy of the Seattle police dept. is, marijuana receives the lowest priority for enforcement.

That's nice to here. If only more places could be so progressive. Where I live they are barely enforced as well. As for the marijuana, it might as well be legal here, I've been caught with multiple grams on my person, driving high, caught smoking. The worst any cop has ever done was crush it under his heel and tell me to leave the area.

    ......

this video actually made me rethink my position towards police officers.

    impulse control? really?

what do you do when someone attacks you?

what would you do if you someone attacked you and it was your job NOT to just walk away.

what would you do if you were surrounded by dozens of people, all being ignorant and putting you down, while the person you are trying to arrest is resisting openly, also berating you, AND someone attacked you?

i woulda punched someone, even if i had time to think about it.

this wasn't a matter of impulse control, it was a matter of emotions and racial tension that, honestly, is being kept going more by african americans than idiot rednecks these days.

am i the only that thinks she deserved it? from what i've read about the story it seems it was justified especially when the other girl joined in. rule number one of life: don't touch cops, don't threaten cops, etc. period.

and i am one that doesn't really like cops much. but, they have to protect their personal safety.

No, there were a few on this thread who did not feel that the women in question did not at the least make a situation worse than need be.

A follow up article concerning the safety issue for officers and the issue with jaywalking.

Yes the girl was resisting, but the fact this cop went out of his way to mess with these women just for Jaywalking in the first place is simply ridiculous!

Do you know what a straw-man argument is?

Yeah, at some point the government has to step out of public affairs, I'm sick of nanny states that give people all sorts of bullshit 'to keep them safe' that at the same time demonstrates that it (the state) doesn't actually give a shit about anyone.

This is a perfect example, punching some one for J walking. I know you all think, well she provoked the attack. But morally speaking, why shouldn't she? I mean she was not hurting anyone, or controlling anyone, unlike the police officer. She didn't walk up to him and give him shit.

I also know a lot of you are arguing that, given the situation she could've been a lot smarter. But really that's like saying the Jews that didn't run away during WWII deserved to go to concentration camps, because that was the situation.

I know an extreme analogy, but the point is this, the situation does not justify itself. That is to say, although it may be stupid to punch a police officer because of how the world works, doesn't not mean it is wrong morally speaking.

And why should any one pay for some one else's stupidity? I know it has been argued that J walking laws keep death rates down from road accidents, but since when does the end justify the means? Why should anyone have to face a fine, and deal with an officer's bullshit power trip/ speech, when they are not hurting anyone? To claim that it is because of others stupidity is absurd, how is she, or anyone else, responsible for retards walking in front of cars?

The final argument i want to adress in support of the officer and the law he was enforcing, is that j walking laws prevent people from claiming insurance by jumping in front of cars. Well this is just stupid, to claim that j walking is the crime in this instance, the crime in such an instance is already recognized and it is called "fraud" not j walking.

So again, to claim that this women should have her actions regulated based on the actions of thieves and retards is stupid, unfair and imho a minor violation of an individual's freedom.

    P.S.
Why are so many people arguing about this as if it has to do with race? Perhaps the perception of the people at the scene was that it had something to do with race? I don't know, but to me it doesn't seem to. Oh well.
