Man I wish I'd been round back then to actually see em live. The older cats were so lucky. Our generation seems to have missed almost all of the good music.

my bad man... i must not have caught that. crazy how it went from 'early grateful dead' to 'favourite dead album' tho... anyway. iffin you want some really early stuff... download (or buy o_O) 'mother mcrees uptown jug champions'. it is acoustic jugband stuff, but tis most delightful for your head.

late 60's to the late 70's is the best of the Dead. much of the 80's and 90's is hit or miss. i have never been a big fan of the early stuff, just doesn't seem as evolved.

if your just gettin into the dead, you could check out sugarmegs.org, it has most or all the shows they played available for free streaming and downloading, and most or all the shows from thier sideprojects. its a good way to get a feel of what they sounded like at different times, and also most of thier 'greatest' 'hits' never appeared on any of thier albums.

What do you they became irrelevant? To music? That doesn't make much sense, just because they were less bluesy. Late 70's were some of there best years. I mean they always incorpoated blues into their shows, they were never a blues band. Thats what was so great about them, they took all different styles of music, and blended it all into some great rock and roll. I definitely agree with you on ripple, some of my favorite lyrics by them.

If you like the very early Dead, you must get a copy of Trouper's Hall in LA, March 1966. The sound quality is astonishing.

I love early Grateful Dead. 66 & 67 were great years. Fresh and full of energy. The first Grateful Dead album is one of the best albums of the ''Summer Of Love''. I'm not big on Grateful Dead studio albums, but their first album is probably one of their best, along with ''Workingman's Dead'' and American Beauty''. I like the live stuff the best. Gimme a nice clean crisp soundboard recording.
Agreed. ''Rare Cuts and Oddities 1966'' is great CD.

A 'must get' for every hardcore Grateful Dead fan...

It was released about 4 years ago. I ordered mine through the Grateful Dead website. Sign up for a newsletter and you get all the latest Grateful Dead info on new releases. As far as ''Rare Cuts & Oddities 1966'' goes, it's out of print already. I think it might of been a limited time offer, which sucks and I have no idea why?

But the good news is you can download it for $11.49 through Amazon.com, which isn't that bad.

You can sample and download the songs here...

I love the early stuff because it is so raw and unrefined,Pigpen definitly rocks and adds a dimension that they never really came close to again.I dont really have an absolute favorite era though,to me it all seems to evolve through time. Each decade brings something new to their sound as well as something is lost, all part of the magic that was the Grateful Dead.Im very happy to see that truely the music never stops, the band members continue to grow and carry the music to new places.

I would agree. All of their stuff is great but most of their tracks that I love are from this time

66 dead is fucking sick. just listen to 66-11-19, they're just rowdy as all hell and you know everyone was having a good time. the cold rain and snow from that show is probably my favorite

oh yeah my god if you guys haven't heard Hard to Handle from phil zone (1971-08-06 iirc) you need to do so IMMEDIATELY

everyone is so on fire the crowd is hyper everyone is into it it's fantastic. it really shows you how integral the audience is to the music, they and the band just feed off each other during jerry's solo until it all boils up and erupts likea fucking volcano I just get chilsl thinking about it hot damn
