When I was in like 9th grade, me and some friends tried to hypnotize my one friend using a ritual my Wiccan friend, Kitty, knew of. We sat in a circle around a candle and were saying some chant. After a minute or two, I zoned out and was staring at the candle flame. I don't know when they stopped chanting, but I couldn't really respond when they asked if I was okay. I snapped out of it after a second, and my vision got really dark and I felt really cold. I got scared but Kitty helped me get out of it and then all was well.

Is that all? I thought you were going to say you self-hypnotized to thinking you're a chicken... or ate an onion and thought it was an apple or something...

most likely that is not hypnosis.
that is more like a state of meditation.

most of the same areas of the brain are involved in both states.

the darkness of vision and coldness is reaction of the brain to be awoken from sleep.
