Has anyone ever reached a higher state through breathing? I did once and came out the other side mindblown and enlightened. It was like I was outside of myself observing my actions.

Anytime you force breathing, you change your blood chemistry.

This can produce a number of shifts in awareness, but most of them are reactions to the oxygen level in your brain at the time.

    Not a true spiritual experience.

By controlling breath, the mind is quitened, but it is like locking up a bird that will start fluttering all over the place the moment the cage is opened. - Ramana Maharshi

    1. Place your right thumb over your right nostril. 2. Close your mouth and breathe in very deeply and very slowly 30 times through your left nostril. 3. This well cause a physiological change in your body and brain...it will mellow you out.

breathworking is a great form of meditation and is used often in rebirthing workshops/exercises - it can help cleanse toxins from your body/being

also, the nasal passage you focus on governs that particular side of the brain - i've always thought that was fascinating :)

There was this guy Buddha... :)

Sure, you can reach a "higher" state of consciousness through anything. All meditation is is the focus of attention on a thought. Everything is thought, except the Absolute. By focusing on breath, you are distancing the mind from the observer (soul). The key here, and most tenuous part, is to relinquish the idea that "you" (the voice in your head) are doing anything. That "you" is not the doer. Sounds like you may have momentarily had that occur.

However, I would be extremely weary of thinking yourself "enlightened." Simply observing that you're not your mind is wonderful, but not quite there yet...

This is how I experience meditation and it is a truly magnificent experience. It is enlightening to feel the weight of the mind lift. Keep it up and you'll find a world where the mind is a graceful and peaceful tool, clear and intent. Though this is not enlightenment as I have come to know it, it is a powerful state to been in and will keep you body (and mind) healthy.

There is no TRUE spiritual experience, there is no HIGHTER state of mind. You just explore reality throught the wonders of attention, wich is basically what links your brain to the outside world. Meditation is not distancing yourself from reality... on the contrary it's reinforcing the link, thanks to the process of attention. Since breathing is a vital process, it is well worth taking the time to say thank you.

Breathing is key to meditation because of the blood flow to the brain which helps with the increase in serotonin and hightens neurotransmitters

There is no condition of the human experience that does not arise with the breath.
