UN Action against sexual violence in conflict Unifem (United Nations Development Fund for Women) has iniciated a campaign of global solidarity to highlight and help stop the use of rape and sexual violence as a tactic of war. Taking part and showing solidarity is as simple as taking a crossed-armed photo of yourself and uploading it onto the Stop Rape Now website. More information is available at saynotoviolence@unifem.org or if you want me to forward the E-mail to you, leave your address in my private message box. The E-mail has much more information, a video and photos of everyone who has already signed up to the campaign. Please act now and help stop what is being called one of history's greatest silences!
Well, it's an interesting concept, and no doubt comes from a good place. I just personally feel that activities like this are too administrative and not in touch enough with real world action. Then again, I am not there seeing results.
Etherea, thanks for posting. Hopefully the more we talk about it, the less it will happen. I feel moved to add though, that we also should be concerned about violence against men. Domestic violence again men (yes, from female partners) is a real issue, and one that is even harder to deal with given out society's views of men being strong and women being weak. Men are a lot more hesitant to come forward because they feel ashamed that a woman hurt them - it happens every day. So Etherea, while I fully commend and support your Stop Violence Against Women thread, I would like to emend it to Stop Violence Against People.
Yeah, I totally agree that there are a lot of abused men out there but this campaign is specifically targetting women in areas of conflict and third world countries where they really can't stand up for themselves and do not have the availability of social services. Using women as a weapon is wrong and this campaign is highlighting that!
