I'm in the lower-west end of cardiganshire (same county as Aber) and is about 30 miles so would be very easy to meet up.

I might be moving to London next year. Since I don't know anyone there, and find it essential to have a social context, I find communal living a good idea. I've read articles on the web about BedZed and a similar complex in Greenwich Millenium Village; apartment buildings with communal areas like a dining room and a living room. But those two aren't the only apartment-style complexes in London, are they?

PS A residence-like building, like Melrose Place, would also work. But I presume that might be too expensive.

Hi all, I am looking into starting some kind of community, maybe not quite self sufficient, but as much as we can be. I am investigating the planning laws etc. for a piece of land in Dorset and found out that if you join the caravan club then you are allowed to have caravans on your property without needing any planning permission!!! I would also be grateful for any advice on wind turbines or alternative energy as I do not want to be hooked up to the grid..

presumably that only applies to your main residence, or perhaps to all land you own designated as for residential use, can't imagine you're allowed to permanently throw up caravans on greenbelt land you own, though iirc you can stay a certain amount of time and if you have enough separate bits you can cycle between them.

as for being hooked up to the grid, well, if you can't get enough money to pay for alternate sources, you could get hooked to the grid, i read this article written by someone once who was bemoaning people installing solar panels on their home when they could save more CO2 by paying for their neighbours to have gas powered dryers installed in preference to electric ones. his point being, that saving the environment doesn't always mean getting something shiny for yourself, sometimes you need to look further afield to be practical.

If it was just about self-sufficiency more than saving the environment, then ignoring having to purchase the equipment from others you could get a petrol (or diesel) electric generator then convert it to be a woodburner and throw peoples paper recycling or whatever in it :)

    Hi everyone,

My name’s Derek and I am a 45 year old male.

I have been lost for some time now and I have been re-assessing what I really need from life. I used to be a director of various companies, both here in the UK and abroad but after years of being disillusioned with the whole capitalist lifestyle just woke up one morning and decided to quit. I have struggled since but I am determined to seek the right path.

For the last 10 years or so I have dreamed of being able to survive by living as close to the land and nature as possible and I am really keen to join with others in a community in order to continue developing and growing these thoughts. I have just separated from my wife [no hang-ups] and I think that the final piece of the jigsaw has been laid.

I am very interested in Buddhism, Wicca, Nature, Environmental Issues, Sustainable Living, Renewable Energy and all other things in life that are both peaceful and promote harmonious living with others.

    Some Experience Offered:
25 years - Company director [IT/Web sector] / Web design / Business development / Marketing etc. I must have other worthwhile uses but I can’t think what may be valuable to you like I have had my own allotment for 2 years, practical manual work etc.

I am looking to belong to a community with like-minded people that is preferably still in some sort of formation stages and has the potential to allow me input some valuable skills so, If you have such a space free and would like to meet up, please contact me.

I probably have more questions than answers at the moment but would love to hear from you. I am very open minded and will consider anything.. well almost :)

Please reply if you are interesting in discussing.

Anyone from Scotland wanting communal living..?
I need to be based in Aberdeen as I'm a student there... Would consider changing that if an amazing opportunity for communal living came up elsewhere though :)
