I got a phone call tonight from a telemarketer in India telling me that the government wanted to give me some money. The thing is, before the government could give me the money, they just needed a little something. Like $250. They won't take it out of the fortune they are promising to find for me, though. They need my bank account information, so they can help themselves to the $250, before they can even send me any information.

I explained to him that I don't give my bank account information out to people.

While this guy had me on the phone I asked him for the URL to the website and I went there. I went to the forums on the website and read them. Every single thread is about people warning other people not to buy into it. Some of it is really, really funny. I registered as notadumbass and posted my own story on there.

Anyway, I got the impression that they target students. He said they offer the money to people who are around 30 years old. Gee, I feel special. Perhaps he had my birthdate somehow and adjusts that parameter for everyone he calls.

So, I am sure that most people on here would recognize it as a scam if they call you, but some people did sign up and are very angry now. I just thought I'd warn people.

lol, you actually stay on the phone long enough for them to get a word in? The second I find out who they are, I hang up. I would be on the phone all day if I actually talked to every telemarketer who calls.

Amen, if I don't hear someone speak right after I say hello, I hang up. There's always that pause for telemarketers. Of course, now with caller ID, we don't even have to pick up, it just says "out of area" or "texas (or some other state) call"

Yeh, I never pick up the phone for telemarketers. I use to back in the day, because I felt bad because that is those people's jobs, and everyone has to do something. But one guy kept calling back, so I don't anymore. My brother has a pretty funny approach to dealing with telemarketers. He picks up the phone doesn't speak, insteads farts into the phone and hangs up. lol after that they don't call back.

I think in this case you were simply pitched wrong. SOME Grant and Loan compnaies actually run a legitimate company. www.grantsorloans.com for instance basically sells a kit and a membership to their website. They ask for a fee of $200 or so and in return you have over 30,000 different grants and loans at your fingertips in which you can apply for. This $200 fee simply saves you the EXTREME amount of time and effort it would take to do any of this on your own. For example: You could do your taxes on your own, but some prefer to pay someone to do their taxes for them. They do not guarantee that you will get $5000 from the govt. for signing up. Rather they guarantee a minimum of $5000 you can obtain through their service by applying for a grant or a loan.
Hope that helps. Not every service is a scam, some are just sold wrongly.

That's what I do to. That two second delay has saved me a lot of time. When I no one responds its either its telemarketing or a "prank" call either way they're a waste of time. If I'm wrong and its an important call with a slow person on the other end I guess they'll call back. Well...... I hope they call back :)

The other indication is when they can barely prodnounce your last name and its not a hard name at all to pronounce... I once had a telemarketer ask me to turn my music down... so i turned it up and put the phone next to the speaker... he he.... never give anyone on the phone your personal information.... and never say yes.... or okay.. or any positive afformation, i answered the phone at work on day the asked it they could send some information to us about their company i said yes... next thing i know theres a 50 charge on the company phonebill... yes alone lets them give a bill to the phone company who will give it to you...
