There were some folks in Missoula last summer, they woke up early one morning to a mama coon and her two kits shredding both of their cats! They had come in through the cat-door.
The momma coon had one cat pinned down and one of the kits was mauling it... the other kit was chasing cat #2 all around the kitchen... one cat was killed, the other was ok...

When they called animal control they were told "it's a wild animal, you need to call the dept of wildlife" so when they did they were told " Oh, it's not a game species, its not our problem, it's a pest and you need to call animal control...

They ended up just buying their own live traps...

Yeah--called here in Eugene. No luck. Nutria are pests and not indigenous so you have to hire someone private. Result=160 bucks to set up traps ,plus another charge for something--don't remember. And they kill 'em,not release 'em. I think you should try my idea of jalapeno juice to the peepers--I haven't yet,but I'm going to.

I live on Long Island near a wooded area, and it's not uncommon for raccoons to go through garbage cans.

They're pretty much harmless, they won't attack you, unless you fuck with them or try and corner them.

But as zombiewolf stated they are rabies carriers, so be careful...

especially if you see them in the daylight.

I don't like being mean to raccoons, but if you have small children and dogs, they can be annoying and a danger.

Also, if you trap a raccoon in one of those traps and set it free somewhere else....believe it or not....make sure it's 4 or 5 miles away from where you caught them....because they will find their way back.

They're smart and almost as dextrous as monkeys. I made the mistake once in Jonathan Dickenson park in Florida of feeding one or two. The next day there was a great gang of them (15 or so)scratchin' around my trailer waiting to be fed.

It's best if you turn them around 3 times while blindfolded before you let them go. It helps throw off any point of reference the may have had.[IMG]

a couple of times I have accidentally left my back door open late at night and then when I walked in there to get a beer or whatever there's a raccoon, just chillin in the middle of the kitchen floor eatin the dog food like it was put there just for it. I get startled so I bang on the side of the stove for lots of noise. Both times it just ran right back out the door.

oh yes, i have a lot of those masked bandits where i live too.
i keep my 4 cats and 2 dogs in the house most of the time. i only let them go outside when i can watch them.

about 30 years ago, i had a neighbor whom had a st. bernard. that monster of a dog got into a fight with a "little" racoon. the racoon got away scot free. the dog almost died from that encounter with the racoon.

i have a lot of coyoties that have moved into this area.
i warned everyone to keep their pets inside at night. just about everyone blew me off. after several of my neighbors saw fluffy beinging torn up and eaten by coyoties; they realized i was not as full of shit as they thought i was.

about 100 years ago, some rich cattle guy had wild russian boars brought to his ranch.
to make a long story short. a lot of them got out. over the past 100 years nothing has been able to stop their numbers from growing.
now these boars are not "cute little farm pigs." some of these mothers can weight as much as 1,300 pounds and, these fucker are huge too!
the asshole whom lives down the street from me, had one of these "frankenstein pigs" in his front yard turning up the soil. these mothers can tear up a yard in no time!
my asshole "neighbor" ran out on to his front yard swinging a mop around and screeming at the boar. he started hitting the boar with the mop. well, that just pissed the boar off and, he gave joe a tusk right into his right thigh. the poor dumb fuck almost bled to death.
what is it about a lot of us guys that, we are so macho stupid when it comes to our yards?
i say, NO lawn is worth your life!

Wild hogs are a real problem, getting worst everyday. Those things breed like bunnies and keeping populations in check is nearly impossible. I think a good idea would be to put a 5 or 10 dollar bounty on them. If you go out and kill 10 or 20 a day, that would add up to some pretty good cash. Also give people a chance to go out and shoot stuff, help the environment and make some cash. Plus the meat can be donated to pantries or given to people in need.:)
