I understand your point. Remember Abu Ghraib? Those photos portrayed female sexual sadism in action. So, those women were equal to their male counter parts, right? After all, if men can be sadistic then women can be as well, right? The point of feminism is to create a world worth assimilating into. The world of sadism and killing isn't worth assimilating into. Nobody is free under a patriarchal system and nobody can fully assimilate into it because we are all tracked from birth into what is appropriate for our gender. What you're talking about is cutting branches off the tree. The whole damned tree needs to be uprooted. This system doesn't work. It needs to be changed.

women should not be in the front lines at all. Feminism or not, its a fact that women are smaller and weaker than men in general. It doesn't mean that we're less equal, or less important in any way. It means that we're different. It's called balance, it's called yin and yang. And honestly who would want to live in a world where men and women look and act the same anyhow? This argument is pointless. I love being a woman and I love being different from men!! I love men who open doors for me! I wish I could scream that from the mountaintops lol. Seriously. Maybe I came to the wrong thread whatever.

I don't mind living in a man's world as long as I can be a woman in it

My view is that just as many women have died in chldbirth as men have died in wars. Childbirth can be a pretty brutal, painful, traumatic thing. Childbirth in days before today's medical advances was likely a prolonged, agonizing thing.

If men were able to get pregnant and shoulder 50% of the pregnancies, then i think it would be fair enough for 50% of people in the army to be women.

As is, some women choose to be in the army anyway. In this day and age, if there was a threat to a country, a good number of single women might very well decide to join the military.

my views on this.... for what it's worth...

women should have the right to do what they want.... women are just as capable of killing as men are... the problem is that we have built this sick imbalanced system according to male values... money is poured into war and suchlike, whereas money is not poured into the domestic realm... females who have actual power within these societies, usually champion male values.... not female values.... it is a biological fact that women give birth to children... once they have children, their priorities change... they value care and nurture and education and health... where is all the money for these things? yes, sure, money is pumped into childcare resourses, but what about valuing the women that choose to stay home and look after the family? what about the part-time workers? women who do choose to stay at home and look after the family are often viewed as parasitic... if females had equal power at the time of the forming of industrialised societies, i think e would have a very different system on our hands... men and women are very different, even amongst their own sexes, but they should be afforded the same rights...

i worry about what is happening to our children... it's almost like they have been abandoned in many cases, due to unacceptable stresses being placed on the institution called family... and the corporations now play a very attractive family type roll... all atuned to profit without due care.... sad...

Went back and re-read all this. Interesting read. I was accused of being a troll--not addressing the questions--ect. Still feel the same, but maybe it's a matter of generational disconnect. Yes,women should be able to enlist and be in any position for which they qualify, including getting shot to shit. There.

Because dare a woman break a nail?

Fuck it, everyone should get out there if men and women are equal. But ideally, we don't want anyone fighting.

But no you're playing the women are 'child bearings and maternal card'. Feminists hate the idea of that wholeheartedly and believe their place is anyone but in the home looking after the kids they gave birth to.

I'm all for equal rights, but feminists aren't looking for them.

I think she was referring to the fact that womens' lives are put on the line in childbirth for the good of our way of life in the same way mens' lives are put on the line in wars. What she did not mention is that the proportion of women who are exposed in this manner is far greater than the number of men who go to war.

I know what she meant. But I find it frustrating that the argument is used in this scenario. One minute it's

WHY do women have to have kids? Our careers are important

It's unfair that we have to have kids!! Why don't you!??

and now it's, 'oh we have children for you, give us a break'. Double standards, I believe. Nothing against the girl who posted it, I think she just echoed what a lot of people would have said.

 i think they should fight if they want to.... and homemakers should also be supported to make a good home whether they be male or female... people, whether male or female should be supported to do what ever they want to do, within reason ofcourse... what ever they feel they are good at... let's face it, there are men who make better homemakers than some women and there are women who are just better equipped to fight... fuck... why does it have to be about male and female... we all just people....

idk... maybe im not being PC... like i give a fuck... arf arf

Well,my post was obvious(?) hyperbole. Most everyone seems to disagree with me and think it's OK for women to come under fire if they want. This discussion is not one I wish necessarily to win and I do believe if women want to be on the front lines, they should do so. I mean bottom line ,women should be able to do whatever they want and can accomplish in life. I've always felt that way and I guess it's what I mentioned earlier-it offends my sensibilities to think of the consequences of it,but then again with me it may just be a generational disconnect. We old suckers can be behind the times,I guess. Sorry if I offended anyone--sometimes I get lit up too easily.

    Ok, a few points:

First, feminism is -not- a monolithic group. It's not a singular ideology that all people who call themselves feminist share. It's a huge number of separate ideas, all sharing an umbrella name. It's also very likely the most lied about and maligned group in the country today. There seems to be this stereotypical idea of what a feminist is, in the minds of many, but I have actually yet to meet or talk to -anyone- that fits the stereotype, or even comes close.

Second, the only people who are currently agitating for opening combat positions to women, and agitating quite loudly and gaining ground, happen to be feminists. So that sort of puts the kibosh on the charge of hypocrisy in this area, no? One of the reasons feminists agitate for this is due to the fact that -all- high ranking positions in the military tend to require front line combat service, at some point during their career.

Next, a large number of those who wear the label 'feminist' also wear the label 'pacifist', or at least 'peace activist'. So there may be some pussyfooting around the issue due to a desire to simply reduce the number of -people- who die in combat, full stop.

Another interesting note: In most wars over the last century, for every soldier that has died, between 10 and 100 civilians have died. And this doesn't tend to discriminate by gender. Sure, it's not 'our' women getting slaughtered, it 'theirs'. And this makes it better how?

Feminism's work is far, far from over. So long as the vast majority of decisions in our society are made by a tiny fraction of the populace, and so long as that tiny group is 97% male, and chosen through alpha male hyper-competitive dominance struggles, feminism still has work to do.

I'll add here, again, some interesting points that have arisen from study of aboriginal cultures. It seems, much to the contrary of prevailing notions, that the majority of such cultures tend to exist in a fairly gender egalitarian state. At least those that have not come into conflict with, or been overly influenced by, 'civilized' cultures. A fascinating thing has been observed though. If such a culture comes under stress, from lack of resources or from outside danger, it tends to switch to a male dominant system. Leadership goes immediately to the most aggressive, competitive males. The cultures becomes more violent, more competitive, and far more short-sighted. When the crisis abates, the culture reverts back to the more peaceful, more sustainable egalitarian system.

The thing here is, it's not that -men- are more violent, per se. It's that men choose as leaders amongst themselves those who are most violent, most hyper-competitive, most capable of dealing with immediate crisis. Somehow, we got caught in a permanent state of crisis. And the result? Centuries, millenia of non-stop war. And now, our short-sightedness is bringing us to the brink of annihilation. Our hyper-competitiveness leaves billions to suffer in poverty, while there is in truth plenty for all.

Feminism, for me, is not just about giving women an equal chance, though that is a part. It's about setting aright a fatal imbalance at the very heart of modern society. If women do not gain an equal say, if we continue to give leadership only to those who gain the respect of men, through competition and aggression, I think we are very near the end of our existence, as a species.

I am always ready to kill when that time rolls around every month. Perhaps the entire frontline should be menstruating women? :p

Also, the whole 'It offends my sensibilities to think of women on the front lines' rhetoric in patronizing, and quite frankly a very subtle form of misogyny. It's placing women into the same general category as children. Helpless innocents that require protection.

Seriously, chivalry is just another excuse for taking away women's rights to make decisions for ourselves. Chivalry is chauvinism.
