Hi, I'm here contemplating on what type of dreads to get; either thin, medium, or think. I've been thinking about getting the thick ones for quite some time now but I'm just curious to know what they'd look like when I first get them, some people say the thick ones are the least liked at the start but I really don't know. I'm going to post some pics of my hair atm and see what your opinions are on which ones I should proceed to get.

what method are you going for? I'm assuming not neglect since you want to control the thickness. If you're doing BCing or R&T then just grab a section. I certainly wouldn't make the decision based on what people think. You can vary the size obviously, a thick one here a thin one there... They will look thin to begin with but they will thicken up at about a year so I really wouldn't be worried about the size. I wouldn't even bother with trying to do thin ones, it doesn't work that well. I'd say go for 1/1.5 inch sections and they will make 1cm ish/pencil dreads ^^ Good luck.

    ^^What's R+T DV:D

To the OP, do everyone a favour and resize your pics, then read the faq. Personally if I were you I would go neglect/natural, you could grow some really awesome locks with your hair type...

Hmm, well I've been growing my hair out since the summer of last year so it's not the neglect method because I've got it washed and blown out a few times here and there and I've got it braided once. I'm just going for a nice dreading look like I want them to be fat but I'm not sure what they'd look like in the beginning stages, and I definitely don't want to cut them off once I get them.
    &&sorry for the pic size.

with his hair type all he has to do is twist it. backcombing would help with sections, but all u really have to do is twist it and let it do its thing. a couple black guys i know did this and have gnar ass dreads.

I'm familiar with twisting but the twists never stay they always untwist back into my "normal" hair per say. Anyway to get them to stop untwisting? Because I used to be able to twist and they'd actually stay and it would look really cool.

I could be wrongt, but I thought to twist, you twist 2 half dread width sections in opposite directions, and then twist them together.... or something.... so that they twist back against each other and hold?

It looks like you may need to let it get a bit longer, especially if you want them that fat. Although if you want to neglect, that would be the perfect length to start.

    Ehh I have no idea.

But i DO know that your hair is nowhere near long enough for twists not done in that fashon to stay in very long...

You should just neglect it, IMO.

*edit* have you looked around at peoples update threads to decide which methods looks you like best? we've got people who have done everything, from aggressive backcombing with crocheting to neglect.

I went with the variety pack. Got skinny's and some chunky's and few congo's forming. But I def like see'n fatty's over skinny dreads.

Yeah I have, I think the neglect might be the best I'm not entirely sure though. but people are saying my hair is long enough to get dreads now and my hair in those pics are fresh out the du-rag so I didn't even comb or pick it out yet you know. But I'm thinking a variety pack would be best.

if you leave your hair braided for like 4months the roots will lock up. then you can take em out and twist the ends. if your too lazy to twist everyday you could use rubberbands at the too. at the end of the year youll have dreads. braid whatever amount of hair you want for the number of dreads. i did this method with 100 braids and had to join half of them. its also a good way of seeing if you want thin or thick braids you know. like after 8months if you think they too small you can still join them.

Oh wow that's really cool, I didn't know you could do that. We'll see how things take a turn though I'm still undecided at the moment.

If I had hair like yours I'd neglect... it would end up so awesome.
I'm in awe of your hair. If you were here in real life I'd be groping your hair rn.
I can just imagine how cool it would-- ...Is this getting creepy?

for some video footy of the beginning of a naturally grown set of locks check out Knotty Unity's thread: My Dread Journey. He just stopped combing and switched to a (mostly) residue free soap for washing his hair
