I don't know if this is the right place to post this or not, but I was wondering, has anyone else watched What The Bleep do we Know while stoned? If you really understand it, its a horrifying, yet beautiful picture of our universe. One that would seem to have almost a spiritual significance, albiet explained in scientific terms.
I watched it before but I don't believe I was fucked up. It's a nice movie; pretty much the basics of what I believe/delve into. It's good to see the information go main stream for the mass to see
Just enough science to make it sound plausible, yet brimming with psuedoscience and new age religious thought, slipped in unawares. Interesting, but also laughable in some of it's premises. Remember if you purchase the film or associated books, you are supporting Ramtha's School of Enlightenment, essentially a cult following the teachings of Ramtha, the 35,000 year old spirit channeled through a woman named J.Z. Knight. Interesting film, but it also helps to understand the people and motives behind it.
That film, while interesting scope/scale point of view and some of the biology, is largely full of rubbish. They also very much misrepresented the thoughts of some of the scientists they interviewed (by selective editing, etc), who were not exactly pleased with that. I wasn't aware of the cult connection, but knowing that I'd say to not touch it with a bargepole.
thats exactly what i thought when i watched it, it has alot of quantim mechanics but also alot of pseudoscience. its really the film makers "interpretation" of quantum physics.
How about the fact that one of the "experts" is a person who claims to be channeling a 35000 year old warrior who wants to enlighten us.
That film annoyed me a lot, probably in part because I was made to watch it as a "family" activity by someone who I don't consider family. The basic biology is more or less correct, but the other stuff is just garbled nonsense, or rubbish analogies. IIRC some of the scientists quoted were very angry at the way what they said was misrepresented in the film. People who don't have a clue what they're talking about shouldn't try to make documentative films about it.
heres one: the movie claims that the conscious observer creates reality. Actually the movie states that this is some law of quantum physics which it is not. the theories of quantum physics have little to do with consciousness. This is not true. and quantum mechanics does not postulate as such. The movie says this because of its agenda, which i will get into later. but first lets examine the main point that the movie puts forth: our conciseness controls the world around us. (yes the "scientist" in the movie really believe this.) first thing you must understand is that this may be impossible to test. why? because you need a conscious observer to observe the test. so its kind of a catch 22. think about this thought experiment: if you were to look away at the moon, would it still exist? think about it, there are no conscious observers to "create" the reality of the moon existing, so does it exist? If you are a logical person then of course the answer would be: yes, it still exists even if there are no conscious observers to create that reality. but how can we test this? we really cant because of the catch 22 that i mentioned earlier. how about this old one: if a tree falls in the forest and nobody is around to hear it, in other words, nobody's conciseness is creating the reality of the tree falling, will it make a sound? again, if you are a logical person, you would understand that the sound is not dependent on anything conscious. sound comes from vibration, which comes from movement, in this case a falling tree, and none of that changes. so yes there will still be sound because there is still movement and vibration. why then, do they push this concept that our consciousness "creates" reality? because the people making the movie are into new age quackery that they have no proof for. since they have no proof, they have to make things up that will make the concepts that they believe in make more sense to them and the world. What kind of concepts do they believe? well an example used in the movie was that the main character was taking medication at the beginning. Later on, she is "enlightened" and i guess that state of mind healed her or something and now she doesnt have to take her medication. so its kinda like "the secret" or mind over matter kinda new age things. so to make a long story short: NO, the laws of quantum mechanics dont say that if you think about something really hard it will happen. the movie says this, but not quantum mechanics.
It was about 4 years ago that I watched it, so I can't remember all the little details. However their misrepresentation and extrapolation of quantum theory was the most obvious error. The post above this gives quite a good breakdown.
I would have to mostly disagree. I believe that if someone has full control over his mind(wich very few do) that we can create an alternate reality or alter our perception. And also I am highly against pharmaceutical drugs. It is highly mind over matter. actualy most people with common sence could see that. Since i stopped taking any government drugs over 2 years ago I have not been sick once and my immune system is as strong as ever. their highly unnatural an extremely bad for you. and even "vitamins" once you body gets used to the constant supply of the "needed chemicals" once you go without them bam your immune system goes into shock and get sick. But back to mind over matter, there have been many accounts where someone has tricked or unknowingly gave the other person wrong or fake drugs or "medicine" and the person feels the effect from it because he is expecting it. And once exercises their mind enough they will be able to do the exact same thing without tricking their mind. and its not new age things, well maybe thats the official word for the whole thing all together. but the things i have talked about have been practised since, well a long fucking time. But i think thats all i wanted to cover. I agree with practicly everything else you said. thanks for listening
yeah your right jaren, this is kind of a gray area, because there is a lot of medical studies that show placebos can make a person get better. Also, placebos are more commonly used for ailments that are more subjective like pain. but this kind of thinking can also be very dangerous. think about a person with diabetes, i doubt any amount of meditation or whatever the new agers are doing these days will make much of a difference in their blood sugar. but if they actually believe this stuff and actually try it, they might die. this is the main reason i am against most of the "mind over matter" school of thought.
Don't make too much of that. The placebo effect is simply a brain response created by expectation or conditioning, which releases brain hormones like dopamine and endorphines which increases good-feel and reduces pain perception; it also stimulates the brain-immune system connection which can (mildy) reduce excessive inflammation. Occasionally it can be very potent, but is almost impossible to induce on oneself deliberately. So it is hardly evidence of "mind over matter". It is rarely possible to train the mind to control bodily functions - some gurus seem to be able to do it, but for most this goes no further than reducing stress chemicals in the body - and you feel a lot better; even your blood sugar can drop if you're diabetic
That's simply not true. People who practice things such as autogenics have been able to raise or lower their body temperature, heart rates, etc. at will. (Extreme example of this) Firewalkers, some martial artists, and etc. have control over their body's response to external stimuli. Scientific studies have shown that people who are optimistic about their cancer have a much greater chance of remission. The brain is the most important part of the human body, and the mind can have extremely important effects on the body; don't underestimate it.
