Not a very well known book, but The Carpet Makers was recently referred to me and I loved it. One of the best books I've read. I'm kind of surprised no one has mentioned it here. It is a German book by Andreas Eschbach and Orson Scott Card helped get it translated into German after he met the author at a convention or something. He was a big fan of it immediately and wrote the introduction for the English version of the book. Intro from wiki: "The book is set on a planet whose sole industry is weaving elaborate rugs. The carpets are made of human hair and require a lifetime of work to complete. The book is a series of inter-related stories that give increasingly more detail on the nature and purpose of the rugs and why the universe has tens of thousands of planets solely devoted to making such a thing, each thinking they are the only one." Anyways, this book is awesome and will blow your mind. I got hooked about 1/4 the way in. And the last half (when you start to get an idea of what is going on) you will read in a wink.
