Correct me if I'm wrong- but I always thought that there was more to being a hippie than SEX, DRUGS, and ROCK AND ROLL and what you look like.

Much more. There is connection and concern for your fellow man for starters. There is the strength and courage to stand up for yourself and others. There is an unflinching ability to be yourself. Not taking authority too seriously (including your own authority). Knowing the difference between the reality of freedom and the illusion of freedom. The love of true freedom. Sometimes being so far to the leaft that you are almost right again. Not falling for the same old bullshit. Inner Peace. I could go on all day.

    Peace Out,
    Rev J

Being a hippie is all about Turning on, Tuning in, Dropping out man..

  5. No need. Pretty much says it all apart from having the courage to be who you are with no apologies.

If it really is much more, where are today's hippies? Look at the majority of threads that are on this sub-forum. I think that speaks for itself. To say I am disappointed in today's youth is an understatement. If you young kids are sitting there reading this, get as pissed off as you want: I really don't give a shit.

I really think the word hippie denotes exactly what you refer to- sex, drugs and rock n roll.

I mean, i'll use myself as an example

    1. I hate hippie music
    2. I don't dress like a hippie
    3. I don't have hippy hair
    4. I don't take drugs, really (I enjoy a smoke of pot, but never too often)
    5. I don't practice cheap sex and am not promiscuous

In saying all that, I live easy, travel and meet people, generally tramp it up around the place with a happy attitude. I personally believe I have a hippy-like sort of existence. However, if I told a 'hippy' that these days, they would laugh at me and slap me with their dreadlocks.

Although what I am saying is that I do agree times have changed and people judge things out appearance and what not, I still believe had I been around in the 60's as I am now, no would would have called me a hippie. There is a certain trend you need to follow.

I hate to say it, but the hippies around my town as actually arseholes who believe they are superior to everybody else.

I'd almost like to debate this but honestly there is a protest about the state of California cutting aid to the elderly and disabled and cutting the wages of caregivers. I am going to check that out for a little bit before I help someone with Muscular Dystrophy get dressed and in his wheelchair and probably join the protest. I am not being a smartass this is really happening. I do have a vested interest in this because this is how I make my living. I bust my ass helping people out. I walk my talk.

    Peace Out,

I thought being a hippie was about being open-minded and loving towards other people and nature, dressing how you actually want to, speaking your mind, and being a true, free individual, nothing to do with sex, drugs or rock and roll...

They look like 'scene kids', who are just dressing to look cool, rather than agreeing or believing in any traditional 'hippie' values.

    Teach Your Children Well ...

The thought is sometimes there - but they need guidance in some of the traditional symbols.

I agree that alot of so-called "hippies" nowadays are just scene kids that are only about going to shows, getting fucked up and dressing a certain way. But there are true "hippies" out there that hold there values deeply.

I know I'm just re-phrasing, but to me a hippie is a state of mind. I've seen several posters on this forum that are so...wrapped up in being the stereotypical hippie that they loose sight of what it actually means to be one. Everything they do, everyone word uttered from their mouths represents the counter-culture perfectly, yet there in no sincerity behind it. I forget who said it (I think it was someone on here) but posers eventually forget the pose. In two/three years they will have moved on to the next fashionable identity and completely toss aside the ideals they once claimed to claim.

    The brotherhood has been penetrated.

"...that's a bit prejudice, admittedly it looks kinda fashion show-esque, i'd avoid using labels till u really know someone...which is my point. Lighten up, hippie is just another label, as with most things if you try to be a hippie, your a wannabe/fake hippie, if you be yourself you'll find out who your supposed to be,

My guess is they are a bunch of models who wouldn't normally dress like that. So, not really any prejudice there

oh, forgot to mention...if it makes someone happy running around imitating other cultures/counter cultures then let them, the amount of depressed people i meet on a daily bases who can't/won't do what they want is terrifying

Nowadays, Ive seen kids that look like a hippie normally would, but when you get to know them, they'd fuck you over worse than anybody. I think a big part of being a hippie, is being someone you can actually trust, Im sure some of the people in the 60s fighting the fight (for peace?), were some of biggest asshole youd ever meet. You dont even have to do anything of what would be considered Hippie, to be what a good Hippie should be. So as for the label Hippie, there really is no "Values" or anything behind it, It is just a look and a smell, Im sure somebody gave this label to the people that were expanding their minds, by creating new ways of play music and meditation.. I think the most important part of that whole flourishing from conservatism in the 60s was the renaissance of sorts of delving into what the Human Body actually is, what our experience here actually is.. Asking why am I here? That kind of thing.. nobody thinks about that shit anymore..
