    is a concept that only applies to our government. no other individual or private institution is obligated to provide it. The only reason the government does is because we don't choose to be associated with it, so we ought to have much higher standards for its conduct.

    I know, but that's not the case

    I agree people shouldn't talk about, say, pedophilia- but there are plenty of less abstract and disturbing things you cannot talk about without being condemned.

    Particularly in America. It's the extremity in which it is taken.

    The government just grants us talk-without-having-to-worry-about-being-executed speech. ;)

    As for whether or the government actually gives us "free speech." That is besides the point, and a totally different discussion. It is important to differentiate between the true meaning of the phrase, and its meaning in legal jargon.
