    Heres what I think.

I think that YOU (your spirit/soul) still remains. All your wisdom and experiences intact. I think your physical body is totally out of the picture. Things like looks and material things have no place in this world. They pretty much just dont exist, you CANT have any of those things. All there is is your spirit that is free to flow with everything, anything you want.

I think you live on through what you leave behind. Be it other people's memories or impacts and changes on our universe. I don't think people just go on to another world or heaven and live a similar material life. If there is some form of continued conscious presence, it would be different than anything we've experienced. It could be a universal experience such as becoming part of the cosmic consciousness, maybe not though. I'm not sure; I don't have the answers.

Self-conscious man thinks he thinks. This has long been recognized to be an error, for the conscious subject who thinks he thinks is not the same as the organ which does the thinking. The conscious person is one component only, a series of transitory aspects, of the thinking person." L. L. Whyte

Awareness does not think or have anything like wisdom, knowledge, or memory. These are functions of the brain and nervous system; the brain is the organ which secretes thoughts, and when you die, your brain dies, therefore thoughts, knowledge, memory, sensation, perception, all cease. Whether pure awareness remains or is also grounded in the physical apparatus of grey matter we will all find out one day.

I think you either get burned or buried under ground.

Sounds about right. I'd like to integrate some form of reincarnation into my belief system, but when I hear Buddhists describe exactly what is being reincarnated, it turns out to be vague and inconsistent from Buddhist to Buddhist. I'd like to think that intrinsic awareness always exists, and that the intrinsic awareness which gives rise to my conscious experience is the same one that gives rise to conscious experience in all others.

When I die, I'm gonna stage a coup in the depths of hell and proceed to take that bitch over:sifone:

Seriously though, I have no clue what'll happen when I die. I may cease to exist. My soul may be recycled/reincarnated. I may burn for all eternity. It may be eternal psychedelia. I may spend eternity flying through an infinite field of nothingness, with only my thoughts and memories to keep me company. Who knows? I'm curious to find out though.

Hua Hu Ching and Lao Tzu were always talking about the ideal of having non-attachment to religious concepts or any concept formed in the physical world.

At the same time it seems like they took for granted the idea of reincarnation-- often talking about how some humans are more evolved and thus more sensitive to the virtue of the Way; also i recall a similar concept to the Buddhist Bodhisattva (a being who chooses to exist in the physical world to benefit others). Were these just encultured memes that the author was unable to cleanse himself of?

On the one hand taoism seems to point toward a no-bullshit way of integrating your mind with your environment. And on the other hand it seems to do some serious presupposing. Its hard to explain why some individuals are more geared toward the Way.

I think its most probable that consciousness/awareness/personality ceases when the brain dies.

I feel as if perhaps when i do die that it won't be the way i expect myself to die. I feel like my awareness will expand more than i can know right now, and when that happens my whole notion of death will probably just be forgotten about.

    Like who dies anyway?

And question, is there a difference between Spirit and Soul?

I feel like Spirit is just like the Awareness that has no thoughts or feelings or anything like that.

I feel like Soul is like what carries on the wisdom from lifetime to lifetime and the emotion and the love.

Worms eat you! Or you get burnt and made into ashes and probably scattered over the ocean or some other whimsical place and then fishes eat you! :D

Depends on what you did, you might be reincarnated into a similar body, and carry on with your path.

You might be ready to move on into a more advanced system, so you'll be incarnated into some advanced form of being, maybe some hyperdimensional light creature (like angels or jeweled self dribbling basketballs or strange alien things).

Or you might become a master, finish all your karma, and live as pure light and consciousness, not entrapped in any body. Go back to the very very begining, into the nothing, just awareness, simple awareness.

What actually happens during these transitions depends on your own personal experience. You end up just becoming like a point of awareness though, and your usually held in some space until your can be redirected into a new ego/body construct.

The ego doesn't necessarily die when the body dies, your ego records are carried with your into the next form. Thats why one must dissolve and detach from there ego, so they can be freed from the cycle of birth and death, like good ol Buddha said.

I think it was what happens when you die, not the moments leading up to it. :p

But then, none of us knows what really happens. If I had to bet, I'd say we simply cease to exist. The stuff your made of goes back into the Earth. All else that's left, and what really matters, is what you've left behind with others. Most all of us have an innate want to continue living in some form though, so that idea sucks.

If I were the creator, I'd put in some form of reincarnation. But then, I also would have given people a little bit more of a clue about what's going on so they didn't have to make it all up themselves. But then there would have to be some form of population control so I didn't keep having to create more souls. And if there was a huge tragedy, I'd be stuck with all the souls in some form of limbo and that'd be a pain in the ass. I'd have to throw them all on another planet or choose which ones have to stay on hold until the population rebounds. If I throw them on another planet, I have to create more souls if I want them to grow. Too much maintenance. Maybe people just having 1 life is a better idea.

I am 100% sure that you die and then that is it, you're gone. It is the only thing that actually makes sense.
However I also believe that DNA holds many possibilitys for the distant future regarding perhaps recreation. Nothing religious, nothing even spiritual, just pure science and logical thinking.

    I will either

    1. Just be dead
    2. Burn in hell
    3. I'll just be at peace with myself, in a semi concious kind of state that cannot really be described or understood by anyone who hasn't experienced it.

The world turns as it does. There is no true sorrow in mourning, only the slanted light of morning and evening.
