Dude, I saw one for the first time last year. I thought it was a hawk at first till it pulled its head back from the dead deer it was eating while we were driving by and I went "holy shit it's a buzzard!"
They look like their head is half-eaten. It's disturbing, but I guess it stops people from eating them.
I've never seen one, but I also live on the edge of the "yellow" zone on that map. Turkey, yes, turkey buzzards, no.
I've seen a few dead ones under powerlines in the past. Even though they are carrion eaters, they won't resort to cannibalism - they must realize how bad their own kind tastes.
I have never seen one and am not sure after seeing that picture if I wish to.. They are not the most debonair of the bird family. I guess it is just like all others, there needs to be an ugly one on the family tree.
The wings do look like that of a hawk. When they land you see that ugly face and realize it's something else. Yeah, but they are still Mama Nature's creatures. .
they are necessary in the eco system because they eat rotting flesh. decreases disease and infection. they dont have feathers on their face to keep from getting messy
Oh, I understand now. But does it dig its head into the carcass, or something?lol Thanks for the info.
Yeah, I was actually really excited because I had never seen a buzzard before and thought they only lived in the old west with the steer skulls and the tumbleweeds. My mother found this hilarious. Yeah, that's basically why they look like that. Over time, evolution has dictated that it is better not to grow feathers and risk infection and the smell of blood attracting predators to it. So they just don't waste the energy making head feathers. I don't know about the "fresh burn victim" skinflap stuff, though...
