Free range is a catchy term, it only means that the poultry farmer has to allow outside access to the birds, it does not specify how long or that they are never caged. Something that activists wish to have changed. So your free range hen may of had 10 minutes a day of yard time. The lovely caged ladies are rather appealing unless you consider that even if left wild, all fowl will lay eggs. So laying eggs is hardly something they are forced to do,

Pigs are omnivores, they would consume meat if it is available. They have been used for just that purpose in many cultures.

I support anyone who has a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle as that is something they wish to do. I do not think they should have to justify why nor explain their choices. I also think that if I choose to eat meat or animals products that I should have to justify it either.

To sugar coat by saying that one way is more humane than another is in my opinion rather ridiculous. It is no different than someone saying I could not see an animal killed and then eat it but they can go to their local market and purchase it nicely wrapped up. We justify what we need to.

To those who are vegetarian or vegan, great and eat well.
To those who are not, great and eat well.

I don't think either side should have to justify themselves either. The main problem I have is with how the animals are raised. For example, with beef they inject the cattle with tons of hormones while practically shoving food down their throats for 6 weeks in small stalls before harvest. This is not only unhealthy for the animals, but also for people who eat the meat.

It just seems they could change the regulations a bit to provide for a healthier evironment for the animals which would in turn produce leaner healthier meat.

While I agree that there need to be changes, the problem is that the changes are only going to make people think that they are doing something that is "good". Organic/free range meat is really the flavour of the decade right now. It makes the do goobers feel better somehow. It does not mean that those animals are necessarily treated any better. It does not even mean that they have not been given antibiotics, unless it is certified that they have not. It is a catch all phrase and we do not have laws to govern it nor do we have inspectors to enforce it. So what is called one thing could very well be another.

Therein lies other problems as before pork was treated with antibiotics there was a huge problem with humans getting trichinosis from it not being cooked properly, hence overcooked pork for decades. With treament of the livestock we have virtually eliminated this.

Not all that we do to ensure a food chain is necessarily bad and sometimes you have to be objective as possible when looking at how it is handled.

Even organic produce farmers only have to ensure that they currently do not use certain things on the produce or land, it does not cover what has been used on that land for decades before or how much residue could still be there.

I eat meat. I have no illusions that if my chicken, beef or pork was raised more ethically that the end result is not any better. They are slaughtered and I eat it.

As I stated I respect all life style choices, but that also means I expect to be respected for mine.

    No easy answers. J

I don't know. To me it's pretty obvious that animals raised open range are treated better that those cramed in stalls and given cheap grains. Also, grass fed animal meat has more nutrients like beta carotene for example ...but I agree that there is miss information out there and the issue has to looked at realistically and objectively.

What ever anyone chooses to eat, the key is to eat healthy.

Have enjoyed sharing ideas with you. Thanks :)
