You get shit pay, dangerous, get cancer from the environment, and it is the only job where you risk getting buried alive.

cause it puts food on the table.. lol. Same ol 100 yr old excuse..
Even with the modern technology its still dirt and dirt wage.. cant change people for one, think the power and energy farming on the surface, but would have to retrain people to build wind power. There just aint enough well minded people, and they dont like change .. Why Obama isnt the best thing to ever happen cause change isnt what people want.. :D

I couldn't swear to it but I'm pretty sure the miner's 'round here make bank. That's one reason.

that's what i was going to say.. some of my mates do a couple of months stint in the mines every summer and come back with a shit load of money.

i think the people who get shit pay are doing it cos they can't feed themselves otherwise.. i was watching a documentary on the bolivian miners when i was over there.. so sad :(

Good Money and a secure job. The miners I've met all got tired of being laid off and having to look for work in other fields. Plus, some may only work 2-3 days a week, and still get paid $80,000.

the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the average wage for a miner is $18/hr. A 2006 USA Today article stated the average salary for a West Virginia miner is $64,000 a year.

One reason why people get into it- family tradition.

Another reason- job availability in rural areas.

Because they haven't reached 18 yet.

I once got kicked out of a bar for being a miner. They saw my helmet with the light and said, "Sorry, we don't serve miners here."

    LOL

But yeah around this way in the UK we're famous for mining etc, it was/is the biggest export Wales ever had.

They are to reopen the mines soon, and that's due to the wealth of coal still here. The miners never used to get pad much at all, but I imagine in this day and age they would.

In the US alone, there are approx. 83000 coal miners....

The lowest the unemployment rate has been in the past 20 years in the US is 3.6%. Right now, it's 10.6%.

That means that people don't always have the luxury of being choosy about what they do to feed their families.

Faced with the choice of mining or watching your children starve... which would you choose?

Yeah. Trying to do two dead jokes in one post is too big of an undertaking.

  19. I don't know about now but villages and towns grew up around the mines and the people who worked the mines lived in these villages. Obviously their children were encouraged to go down the mine because there was no other form of employment in the area. It was a very lucky person who had the chance to leave this environment. Mining towns and villages were and are little communities on their own and most inhabitants are very proud of their heritage. But it comes down to - shit job but somebodys got to do it!
