People keep asking me what I'm going to do with my life. When I tell them that I don't know, they give me this look like, 'yeah, hope you don't turn in to a total wasteoid,' and then proceed to tell me all these things that they think I should do.

So, while I was laying on the grass in front of the local Catholic Church, waiting on the guy from the tow company to come and change my tire (thank goodness I just happened to be going by the church when I got the flat because I'm too technologically inadequate to have a cell phone), I was thinking about that. But my mind kept wondering to how good the sun felt on my skin and how just laying in the grass is always going to be one of my favorite things to do-ever since I was a child.

Then, it came to me. I know what I be to be 'when I grow up'. I'll be a Sunflower. This champion among flowers, that stands tall and strong. They spend their days reaching for the sun and as far as flowers go, their perseverance has really paid off. Their dedication and worship inspires me.

They've got it all figured out. I'll grow until I can't grow anymore, then I'll pollinate and spend the rest of my time soaking up some rays. Brilliant.

anyway, there isn't much of a point to this thread but luckily this is Random Thoughts and we have a talent for veering off topic anyway. :D
So what did you want to be when you were little and has that drastically paled in comparison to what you are doing now?

:) I liked the hearing the random thought, if that's any consolation.

I wanted to be a pilot when I was younger. Nothing interesting though, I was desperate to work in Civil Aviation industry. I don't even know why anymore. Lost that dream along the way, when faced with the huge amount of work required, and I was lazy.

I don't think i'd be very happy working in that field anymore anyway =/ Things have changed a lot since I was young! In my life at least hah.

    Peace

    lol yeah, it actually is.

I'm not even high but it was just bubbling up and I had to tell someone. Everyone I know is asleep or drunk, though. :p

I always change my mind about things like that.

I wanted to be a vet first, then a chef, then a translator, then a freelance photographer, then an actress. I just sort of ended up where I am now, doing medicine. I still think it'd be cool to be any of those things. I hope that in my life I will continue to dabble in all of them! Otherwise I'm sure I'll get bored.

All your aspirations are so grand they're exhausting me lol

I'd be content if people would just let me laze around. The sunflower cannot grow with people constantly bending its stem  This is code for me being a lazy bum.

Oh, I'm sure I'll get bored too. But I'm running on a week long bout of insomnia and frustration so it sounds pretty good to me, for now lol

when i started to think about real careers and pathways, i considered massage therapy, psychiatry, and various types of clinical psychology including marriage&family, trauma, etc.
i have taken the psych path and will be in grad school very soon to get my masters but am also considering a direct route in PsyD programs (equivalent of a PhD) but that will lock me in for 5-6 years as opposed to masters programs which i want to pace myself and finish in 2.5 years. anyway where i am now...my main job is in educational psychology and research. my weekend position is in clinical psych, particular in stress and coping with some degree of trauma and major life transitioning

I can definitely see the appeal of the sunflower.... although I'd be something like a Fern because I like it dark and cold...

When I was little I really wanted to be a concert pianist, and that is still something I would like, but I doubt I'll ever be good enough. I also really wanted to be a farmer when I was young.

Yeah, I've seriously considered massage therapy. I still think it would be a pretty good career match for me.

you should look into it. it seems like it could be a fairly interesting job that would give you the option of working in a variety of different settings. i always thought it would be cool to be one on a cruise ship lol

Ferns are way cool. They've got it great-especially the ones surrounded by moss.

I guess you could compromise with your dreams and get a farm with a big barn and turn it into like a hoedown where you play the piano and get someone with a guitar, banjo and fiddle. lol

I don't know if I could do a cruise ship. I think I'd spend more time being sick than working. haha It does seem like a really cool job, though.

I want to be a pilot when I was younger, and fly planes 'n shit. I am instead just doing Corporate Law and Business Management now instead. But I am sort of happy with it.

People constantly think I am going to be some bum when I get older, but fuck it. I had the same sort of epiphany this evening myself this evening.

I went out to see two different groups of friends, the couples with kids on the way, mortgages and whatnot, and my lazy bum friends at the pub. After being spoken down to by the former for a few hours I finally realised I do not want to aspire to be like them- they are all miserable deep down.

I went to the pub with the latter group thereafter and had a blast. We are all clever (not bragging), but decided we wasted our potential having too much fun. Truth is, as we are getting older we realised we are all getting by fine and in fact loving every moment of our lives.

My little digression is just so as to agree with your remark regarding 'sitting in the sun'. I think it's the only way to be. I am finally pulling my weight and getting my degree, but I can never put myself down compared to other 'successes' just because I stay up late drinking, dancing with girls in clubs and sleeping out under the stars on sunny nights.

I just had to say that then, been thinking about it only over the last few hours

As a kid, I wanted to either be an astronaught, an engineer or a research scientest. I desperately wanted to go to MIT...

As I got older and things like money (specifically tuition) got through to me, that switched to a computer programmer...

Add more age and it changed to having a place where I could build and experiement on my own which led to where I am...

Minus the part about not going to space, I have no regrets about my path. (and I still have hopes on space one day... lol)

Exactly. I think the problem with people today is that they aren't doing what makes them happy. If it doesn't make you happy, then what's the point? I mean, as long as you aren't hurting anybody or anything like that, I don't see what the big deal is. Whatever happened to, to each his(or her) own?

To quote Little Miss Sunshine, "Do what you love and fuck the rest."

I have no doubt that you will make a wonderful astronaut. :D

When I was young I wanted to be all the things kids want to be: astronaut, teacher, doctor, lawyer, in other words, professions always proposed to you. Then one day I asked my mother what she wanted to be when she grew up (me being very young at this time) and she answered "A care bear." That answer always reminds me to think outside the box :D

Right now, I don't know what I want to do. I enjoy learning and could go to school forever were it not for the expense. I have a full ride right now (for another two years) but then I better get it together :p
