So how long does it take for the roots to lock? My hair is naturally wavy and it gets oily as well which sucks but you know baking soda wash does the trick. I've had my dreads for about a month and 8 days. They're starting to lock up but theres this one section at the back of my head that looks sort of flattened out actually it's not doing much of anything.

I backcombed but I mostly just leave it to neglect, twist and rip.
No wax, it's not my thing but you know to each their own.

Any solutions on the flat part? Has this happened to you?

    Thanks for all answers!
    Happy Earth Day

    Your hair is constantly growing.
There is and should always be unlocked hair at the roots.

Your going to have flat sections in your hair, probably due to sleeping on them. Don't worry about it, just leave them alone. And yea I'm with np on that statement, lol, never seen that before.
