The government in Canada has come out with tougher laws for checking gas pumps that rip of consumers by giving less gas than the customer pays for and will increase fines.
They are putting the spin on it that they are going after shady gas people, out of concern for the little guy.
But I believe the real reason is, that with Obama's new tougher rules for cars and gas consumption, that Canada followed, it is now in the best interest of the government to make sure you get the gas you pay for.
For example you drive a new car that is supposed to cut gas yet you have to refill twice as many times.
This does not look good for the whole greener planet numbers, or the government that says it is going to make a difference.
What are your thoughts, am I way of on this?

I'm not sure where you are going in thought, but fuel efficiency is a concern, and the government of Canada has a priority to evaluate that consumers get what they are being told they are receiving - irregardless of what happens south to the border.

Proposed legislation is far from being a law, but it's a start.
You would think this proposal would be met with open arms, not the case here.

If it's such a priority why has it taken this long to do anything? So far as of yesterday this"Fairness at the Pumps Act" is just a proposal not a law. And its not just gasoline, pretty much any and everything that is sold by weight or volume.
Now south of the border it has been around for over 30 years.

How long has the problem persisted in Canada? I've never had problems.

An investigation in 2008 looked at inspections from Jan. 1 97'- Aug. 28 2007, about 13 years.

How would you know if you had been cheated? Around 5% of stations checked were giving less fuel than what was charged for,the avg. loss per tank was $2.

We all knew that we were getting ripped off. But we just didn't care. We kept buying SUVs to increase our consumption.

You know what really RIPS off. It's the idea of funds, which I believe a nation couldn't live without. There is obvious what does not exploit or take advantage in cheating circumstances the BALANCED budget. Funding always presents the case of where a budget is balanced or not. One's health depends on funding with the balanced budget never from an oil industry, always from a concern for true Human Capital.
