I'm doing my boyfriends dreads and his hair is difficult. I'm not new to this and our other friend's is doing just fine, so I think it's just his hair type. He has thick oily as hell hair. It was 4 inches before dreading about two or three weeks ago, and not to much shorter because I don't back comb, I just knot em. Well the back will not stick and even the top unravels so easily!! They come out and I work on em everyday, so I'm thinking I need to dry the suckers out. I got him using doctor bronner's tea tree soap but other than that what are some ways to better make his hair more adaptable to dreads? p.s. I've also concocted a seawater mixture for him to spray on them. I think I remember squeezing lemon into my mixtures when I use to have dreads but I can't remember for sure. Also he doesn't like the smell but I should be able to add a nice scent in the way of oils even tho I'm trying to de-oilify his hair, right? If that makes sense... Thanks in advance...
maybe some baking soda or apple cider vinegar to try "drying" his hair out. and i am also curious as to the knotting method.
I don't know how to explain my method really. Just kinda pulling the hair down to the root repeatedly until it works a knot up it.
1. wash the hair with baking soda 2. 4 inches is probably too short, especially with the method you are using. it seems like you are wasting your time re-doing them every day 3. salt water will do nothing for the hair besides dry out the scalp. unless of course you are swimming in salt water. spritzing his head with salt water won't do anything helpful.
it'll dry out his scalp, which will in turn produce even more oil. just leave em alone and wash a lot!
