Most of the cars are too damn narrow. When my wife and I were dating, we would get in the back seat and she would put one leg up on top of the front seat. That seemed to work out better than anything else we tried. Now I have a big Jeep with tinted windows in the back, so we can fold down that back seat and have a large, flat area. But we're getting too old to care about using it much. We just wait until we get to a bed to fuck.
