Got into an argument today with an ignorant friend about this. He says I can't call myself a hippie since I don't do drugs;I say he's uneducated. Can you please help me? rettyplease:
"The way of the hippie is anti-hetical to all repressive hierarchical power structures since the are adverse to the hippie goals of peace, love, and freedom." Real Hippies from A-Z Skip Stone If one is "hip"to or understands these ideals and follows them then one may, probably, call themself a hippie.ThoughI would personally perfer free thinker. "Hippies don't impose their beliefs on others.Instead, hippies seek to change the world through reason and by what they believe" Real Hippies from A-Z Skip Stone Tis true these are from a book but I thought they were written in a way that is better than I could have said. I stepped into freedom in 1968 and have lived pretty much according to this. In the Vietnam protest some of the strongest people were catholic priest, who didn't do drugs. Doing drugs has nothing to do with what is written above and one should only experiment with drugs when they feel the need, not when others tease them for personal satisfaction.
How does his opinion matter? Hippies do not define themselves as such... it's a label that others place on them. I first instinct is that if someone self-labels as a hippie then it's a pretty good indication that they are not. Rules? Drugs as a prerequisite? There is no chemical regimen in order to qualify- neither a dress code or hair length requirement. "Hippie" is something that is projected from the soul and not from its wrapper.... and my sense is that it isn't so much something you choose but conclusions that others make based on their observations of you.
I used to get the same shit when I stopped smoking dope for a while (about 12 years). There were some hippies who as a part of rebelling against the status quo of western society started embracing eastern spiritual systems such as Islam that frown upon drinking and drug use. In the jam band scene there are bands like Sound Tribe Sector 9 who are starting a Straightedge movement within that scene. Also there are the Warf Rats who are Clean and Sober Deadheads who have meetings in the parking lots at shows. But the question I have for you is do you think you can be a hippie if you don't do drugs? Peace Out, Rev J
It struck my dry sense of absurd... the marketability of a "hippie conversion kit". Now let's all address the contents of such a commodity and in reference to the opening salvo posted in this discussion, would the kit contain paraphernalia and would this genius retail gem be found at head shops?
thanx everyone. he's a bit pigheaded, wouldn't hang with him if he didnt' have such killler taste in film and a sense of humor.....but i just showed hiim this, and he said, "You're right, you are a hippie." my ideals mathch the above definitions, and all that matters is acceptance
That must be a weird New England thing. I grew up in Maine and my dad had a friend who'd stop by and bitch about Maine and how backward it was and how "All the real Hippies are in Vermont." On top of that don't get me started on Phish heads. Anyway I digress. As my old hippie friend Diamond Dave used to say, "Don't worry be Hippie. Fuck 'em if they can't take a joke." Peace Out, Rev J
a person is known as a hippie by the way they live their life, by their train of thought, and how they view things not by how many or what type of "drugs" they do. "drugs" are all about personal choice.
Drugs don't mean anything. it's all about how you feel about yourself, in the long run. thats all that matters.. Peace
I want my body and mind to be pure- to me this means not taking drugs to achieve being high or openmindedness.
I was once told i wasnt a proper hippy cause i dont smell bed - crazy hey! ohh and i wasnt a proper dreadlock casue my bus was clean!!! People can be total plums sometimes being a hippy is about gaining your own view and not pushing your ideals onto others (well part of it) i reckon! Be happy and show them thats a hippy
