I suppose a lot of this has to do with what "shit hitting fan" is defined as.

Global disaster, loosing a job or a house, being in a general state of chaos?

With a global disaster some will survive. Some people can adapt to change, some can't.

Economic and political meltdown are different.

That is why it is important to be self sufficient.

Ultimately you clean up the shit you can and just move forward.
