"I believe that scientific knowledge has fractal properties; that no matter how much we learn, whatever is left, however small it may seem, is just as infinitely complex as the whole was to start with. That, I think, is the secret of the Universe." - Isaac Asimov Why or why not?
Agree. Perfect way to state it. The more we know, the more we try and learn about the new discoveries. Its a never ending process, as we expand our knowledge we create new possibilities. Its hard to explain as philosophical stuff often is but i definitely agree.
A bit heady for the stoners lounge isnt it But agreed. This statement, combined with Pauli's exclusion principle - monitoring a system affects the system itself, and Einsteins theory of general relativity - results are dependant on the perspective of the observer Means no one person or entity will ever be able to know everything, and even if they managed to it would be just from their perspective, which would be useless to everyone, everything else
Science is the observation of the natural world, and to me, nature seems to be the outward manifestation of mind. Both are fractal, both are infinite, so I believe science's purpose not to be eventually finding the grand, big "Thing", the ultimate answer, but to just make life easier and create growing functionality as we become increasingly more and more complex.
its like researching your ancestry. even if you learn everything about your direct ancestors, what about their siblings' families? the people in the towns they grew up in? is it possible to know every person whos life was ever touched by someone you are realated to? its a beautiful complexity.
well I think life and existence is a fractal, but not scientific knowledge on the human level. That scientific aspect is alignment, like two lines crossing eachother inside the grand scheme. When the lines start crossing, it makes more and more sense as it goes along and somewhere down the road they'll just disconnect (along with that model of life). But the grand scheme, or the whole fractal is still there. This is kidna along the lines of the Membrane Theory philosophers are playing around with. And I think answers do create questions, but less questions than before. I see it as a funneling formation. I think its weird when people think answers create more questions than before.
That quote is a good way of putting it. I've often thought the same thing but fractal is an excellent word for it all. it's funny you should say that, for a few years I've been discovering that there is as much in our heads as there is in the whole universe. This is how I envision it: Take an infinity sign... a figure 8 shape I can't do it on this computer but you know... one side is inside the human mind, the other is everything that's not the human mind. And where the two sides connect is, us. The human problem, if you will.
Boguskyle I think there are more questions than before because every human 'era' (I use that term loosely) has disproven the previous ones answers before It wrong which in term makes us question our own assumptions and beliefs. Competing schools of thought, different cultures, advances in technology constantly reshape ideas of notions and ideas that people seem to think are fixed or set in stone. ... I apologize for not quoting your response.
don't sweat it. Imo, When a discovery happens that changes what was set in stone, it most of the time doesn't change it entirely but sets the fixation more accurately in place. And also another thing is what we humans want to believe. Science and facts solidify the relevant middle grounds between beliefs, and solves solutions. But at the same time I don't see any new frontiers of questions quite happening. Things come along, and knowledge continually grows, and certainty grows with both past and even future conceptions. So i guess certainty is the main thing I'm sayin. People can always ask questions, but i don't think answers create more questions in all the relevance of things.

[chorus] Everybody in the club gettin tipsy, Everybody in the club gettin tipsy, Everybody in the club gettin tipsy, Everybody in the club gettin tipsy.
You have an interesting perspective on the matter. I remember a thread on the psychedelics forum where the division between mind and brain (consciousness and matter) was discussed thoroughly. Perhaps matter births mind which will in turn birth more matter, i dunno. I have a really, really hard time attributing anything close to consciousness to something that doesn't have a nervous system. Also, in the words of the dead :deadxmas:: what would be the answer to the answer, man? the question i guess. :coffee:
i pretty much agree with the statement, but i do think we chip away at the "truth" or the "right answer" when it comes to science. but in the search to answer one specific question, we often have to ask several new questions. nature is a fractal. science studies nature. i think it's pretty right on
